For those using effluent water to irrigate the golf course, how often are you aerifying? What about slicing and/or venting? Soil amendments? I am particularly referring to roughs and fairways. Lastly, how often are you testing your water? We are about to embark on a regrassing/renovation and it's not a secret that our water supply could be better. And after the winter that we had with warmer than normal temperatures, we are certainly sealed off and the turf is just "there." Not much response and taking soil samples. Any help or thoughts would be great. Thanks

    Tony,

When I was at a course that used effluent water in SW Florida we tested the water quarterly just to keep an eye on it, if truly concerned monthly may be needed in the beginning of its use. It was generally very well conditioned as it belonged to the city of Naples and it used it extensively also and still does even more to this day. I would say to you consider Seashore Paspalum as the turf of choice and you can limit or remove many of the issue you might have with the effluent water to begin with. I am a huge fan and lover of Paspalum to this day. It is a fine turf with many excellent varieties in use now at many courses utilizing effluent water all the way to sea water as the irrigation source at times. I may be just blowing my horn but always push hard for paspalum when I see people fighting issues with effluent water or salinity, water quality, as it is a great turf for golf course use at any mowing height, looks great, plays great and environmentally sound for sure! One can do weed control with salty water for example and cut down on chemical use is a great selling point in my mind. I am a open minded, environmentalist, who always pushes for the best way to solve a problem with least chemical input if possible and love great golfing conditions, Seashore Paspalum fits the effluent water mold! JMO...

I have the same kinds of issues with my effluent. I have had pH readings as high as 9 with bicarbonates out the wazoo. We actually run flush cycles in the fairways and tees along with gypsum apps and RxCa in my fairway sprays. On the greens we pull cores twice a year and vent four more times, two of those deep. There is alwaya a Ca or K product in everything we use, granular or liquid.

So far so good for us. Good luck
