    Greetings:

When I played in the GCSAA Tournament in Palm Springs, CA a couple of years ago - I shipped my clubs UPS from Massachusetts round trip at a cost of close to $200 and that counted insurance. Clubs were waiting for me when I got there.

$200? Wow, I'm hoping it will only be slightly more than the cost to check the bag at the airport.

It will be a lot cheaper and simpler to take them with you. The last time I shipped clubs home it cost $75.00.

    Tim,

That is for a regular bag, since a golf bag is longer some airlines might charge more the $25. I do know Air Tran charged for my bag, and would have charged more for over 50 lbs. I thought my bag was close but I must be getting old, it was only 38 lbs with all the stuff from the show.

The last time I toted bags along I borrowed a friends hard travel bag. Airline checked it like normal. But, now with the fees, it counts the same as any other bag. Delta says first checked bag is $25, $35 for second. Each bag must be under 50#.

    From the Delta website:

    Golfing Equipment

One golf bag may be accepted as checked baggage; checked baggage fees may apply based on travel region and total number of checked bags. Overweight baggage fees will apply to bags that exceed 50 lbs; oversized baggage fees will be waived for golf bags that exceed 62 linear inches. Bags exceeding 115 linear inches will not be accepted.

One item of golfing equipment is defined as:

    One golf bag containing one set of golf clubs;
    Golf balls and tees; and
    One pair of golf shoes.

Golf clubs will be accepted as checked baggage under the following conditions:

Golf bag is packaged within a hard-shell case
Golf bag is packaged within a soft-sided golf club travel bag after a limited release has been signed
Delta is not responsible for damage noted at the time of check-in or damage due to over-packing the bag.

If you go to your airlines website, and search "golf clubs", a whole myriad of info will pop up.

    Mel,
You are correct...the airline industry is in difficult times and will more than likely have changed their policies. I have a carry/stand bag and did not bring the usual gear that i normally have in my bag at home so that i would be as lightweight as possible.

As andy said, check with the airlines as their policies may differ/have changed.

Difficult times my butt, I heard they made millions if not over a billion on just baggage fees alone.

Thanks though for the info Andy and Tim.
