I am looking to get a feel for the number of man hours guys are using per season.
We are an 18 hole golf club open from Mid April to Nov 1st usually. I have just under 2.5 acres of greens which we walk mow. I have 2.5 acres of tees which are tri plexed 3 times a week. We have 20.5 acres of fairway cut and another 5 acres of primary cut. We have approximately another 110 acres of maintained rough. We also have 1.5 acres of bunkers.
Would love to hear from guys with similar seasons and similar measurements as to how many man hours you use.
    In 2014 we used 12,141

    Thanks for any info.

We are a 27 hole operation but 9 is a small very limited input golf course for the resort guests. We have around 3 acres of greens, 3 acres of tees, 25 acres of fwy and maybe 30 acres of rough that we maintain. we were a small crew last year; couldnt get everything done that we wanted to when we needed to, but we had 10,833 hours total including a part time mechanic.Next year were looking at adding 5 additional staff to bump us up towards the 14 to 15000 total hour range. I think that we would be getting everything done ( you never do) with this many labor hours. Where are you located? What is your pay scale there for new hires with no experience? We get a fresh crop of new international students each year thanks to a program through the resort.

There were a few supers in our area that totaled their man hours for the season and each course was over 20,000 man hours for the season (aprox. April to November) That included a full time mechanic and a few winter employees. The assistant and super were not included in the calculation.

    John,

Municipal course 25 miles west of Chicago.

Greens- 5.7 acres walk mow 4 to 5 days/week - triplex or roll other days
    Tees- 4.25 acres triplex 2-3 times/week
    Fairways- 44 acres mow 2 times/week
1/2 acre of annual flower beds
maintain carts, equipment, buildings inside and out.
    maintain / remove 4,000+ trees

    John:

I have worked with several clubs to determine the right amount of labor needed. First I start with a standard of maintenance that everyone "buys into". From there we attempt to quantify labor needed to accomplish the tasks needed to adhere to the standards agreed upon.

I have attached a quick excel sheet to help you sell the amount of hours needed.

    I hope this helps.
    My best, Mike

Our season is about the same as yours with a whisker more of walk mowed green acres and 5 more fairway acres. Our staff is pretty small spring and late fall but we totaled 7294 hours not including the assistant and myself, but does include the tech.

We are a bit above average 18 hole course open all season with very average amounts of bunkers, fairways, etc. After seeing this post I calculated about 20,000 man hours. What are some of you guys open all year like?

    Thanks Michael

This is a pretty subjective comparison due to the numerous variables. But, we are a high end for our area, daily fee, linksy, mostly open with trees only on a handful of holes. 22 years old, bent tee to green. 24 acres of fairways and approaches, 2a tees, all cut 2x per week. 2a greens. 80a of maintained rough and g and t banks cut 1x per week.

Not including our assistant and me, we are usually around 9,500 hours. Another 2,300 or so for me and about 2,200 for our assistant. 1 full time equipment tech, 1 full time laborer/operator, 7 seasonal laborer/operators. (4 seasonal positions are budgeted from April 1 to Oct 31, 1 from April 7 to Oct 15, 1 from April 7 to Sept 30, 1 from April 7 to July 1, seasonal 5-7 usually happen through attrition so we just budget for that and don't fill their positions when they leave).

I put together a spreadsheet to forecast for a year. I calculated 20,587 man hours for our course. I am missing a few jobs but I feel it is a good representation of what we need.

    2.5 acres of greens triplex
    36 bunkers
    2.5 acres of tees
    28 acres of fairways
    30 acres of rough
    Maintain clubhouse grounds

We have 90 acres to maintain, 2 acres of greens and tees, 25 acres of fairways, 14 bunkers. We have cool season greens and warm season tees and fairways. Mostly double row system (some triple) with old SBM boxes and 51 impact heads, but the system is pretty tight for being 20+ years old.

We have a total budget of 13,606 man hours. This includes us 3 FTE's, part of the mechanics hours (686 hours) since he is shared, and a PM mechanic (1248). We also have one person dedicated to landscape 99% of the time and she is budgeted at 896 hours (32 weeks at 28 hours). We have 2 part time seasonals, at 32 weeks, 1 seasonal budgeted at 40 hours between April - September, and two seasonals who are budgeted at 20 hours for 12 weeks while they are in school, and 40 hours for 13 weeks in the summer.

18 holes, on 350 acres, 6.3 miles of cart path. 32 acres of bent fairways, 5 acres of bent tees, 4 acres bent greens, 30 acres of cut rough, 60+ acres of tall stuff.

Slow start-up March 1, wind down Nov 15th.

leveled off at 16,000 LH the last three years. Lower than that we get major complaints.

We are down from 28-30,000 in the late 90's.
