Looking at getting a new 10' pull behind rough mower. What are the pros/cons of the Progressive versus a Lastec? Service, problems and quality of cut over the length of service.

    Thanks for the help,

Just saw a new Progessive in action. Lastec by far the best.

Poipu Bay. If that is where I think it is, tough duty but some one has to do it.

When I first got here we had a 1 year old Progressive Pro Flex 120 and it was a great machine. As the unit gets older it is definitely eating more belts. The other issue I have had is the local dealer and parts pricing. This is where service can make or break a deal. I didn't realize how bad they were bending me over on parts pricing until I contacted Progressive to complain. I have since found another source for parts and refuse to buy my parts from the local Progressive dealer. The Progressive unit was bought to replace a old Lastec 721XR. Last year I pulled out the old Lastec unit and replaced the gearbox, a few wheels and spindles and that thing works like a dream. Not sure why, looking at it now, they replaced this unit. Quality of cut I would have to give a very slight edge to the Progressive, ability to handle contours the Lastec gets the nod and cost to operate and repair costs goes to the Lastec. I sure if you go with the Progressive, Guy Hagi at B. Hayman will take good care of you. Probably hard to get units to demo on Kauai. I never dealt with Allied Machinery much when I was over there so I don't know what their service is like.

    Good luck Brian.

Don't know anything about Progressive, but I have been using the Lastes for years. I use two 721XR's on my 155 acre course and they do a great job mowing 123 acres of rough to 2". UPSIDE: They are work horses and we run them into the ground. Quite, smooth with very hard steel. The decks take a good beating out here. We used "Shred-It" blades on them and mow about 11 to 15 acres per day per machine. Nice clean mowing and very reliable. We use JD 4720's pumping 25hp and the two are a great combo. DOWNSIDE: Lots of pivot points and moving moving parts - keep up on the maintenance & Lot's of grease! Parts and maintenance are EXPENSIVE! When things start to wear, leveling of the decks can be challenging. Gear box can be a pain at times. Gets quality belts, not the cheap ones. Super dense turf causes some of our belts to fail. We try to get 7 years out of our mowers and we accomplish that. My current mowers are roughly 5 years old and we are now entering the time frame of major retrofitting, welding and shaping. We'll get them two more years out of em! Give them a demo.

If you buy a Progressive 120 remove all four belt covers or never raise the decks into the transport position and the belts will last a long time.
