So.....this seems to come up every few years and causes a sensation until there is a dramatic failure.

I hate to knock another Super for some off beat ideas; I have a large number of those myself. But from everything I've heard from my Florida friends, you need to beat that Bermuda into submission or it becomes a nightmare. I guess if it works for the time being, great but I don't see how it will work long run

I know the guys out at Streamsong pretty well. I've played there a number of times and I also realize that the course was built in a unique area (former phosphate mine) atop what is basically millions of yards of Florida sugar sand. He has great infiltration rates out there and I would have to say knowing Rusty that if the conditions call for it he will aerify. I know they are always analyzing soil conditions and based on what they are seeing this is the best program for their conditions.

It's definitely a spectacular property with great conditioning. His greens and all of his turf always look top notch. Rusty, Kyle and all his guys have had to take a unique approach to unique conditions and do a great job. You feel like you're standing in a beautiful Scottish inland links course when you are out there.

With that said, his program would never work for me.

I get it that there may not be thatch to manage and infiltration may not be an issue, but I really think that one of the most important, if not THE most important reason to pull cores is to get some new grass plants growing and increase the vigor of the stand by constantly growing new plants. I think that gets lost in all of the talk about thatch and moving water.

    Regards,

    Steve

I know he is on a regular verticutting/topdressing program. Not sure how aggressive. During the growing season I do a double verticut/double cut/topdress every other week which works very well.

    I guess time will tell.

I'm definitely going to ask them about it next time I see Rusty or Kyle.

I have this one practice green that I have been omitting from my aerifications for a few years. It has actually held up really well to the point where I may consider trying it on the golf course. The key has been verticutting and HEAVY TOPDRESSING.

I think with heavy enough topdressing, especially if you do it on a new course from day 1 it might work

    Didn't TPC Sawgrass try that?

Do the golfers complain about always having to play on sand?

I understand the reasoning for not aerifying, but has he substituted something else in its place (like hydrojeting, air injection). Our treasurer has been trying to get us to stop aerification of our TifEagle due to loss of revenue during these times. I simply cannot do it without some other form of cultural practice in place. we have become an extremely low budget course since first renovating our greens 18 years ago. I cannot even afford to do bi-weekly topdressings with the few workers I have not to mention the cost of the sand.

Has anyone found a practice that may cut all but one aerification from my program?

PlanetAir every two weeks. One operator three hours per 100,000 sq. ft. No loss of revenue. Sorry naysayers it works.

I'm a believer Corey at least when it come to cool season grass but that Bermuda these guys are maintaining seems to be a different beast, not that I have ever seen it when out of dormancy.

PlanetAir on bermudagrass is great if you like to look at scaring for a few days. Not great on the UDs.

"I had always believed heart and soul that you couldn't grow bermudagrass on sand, and there was a lot of sand here."

I find that an odd statement. Isn't Florida basically all sand? It seems most people I know in Florida grow Bermuda

PlanetAir----Mow---couple of turns on the sprinklers generally eliminates browning of tips.

Unfortunately, not the case in my experience and I tried most everything. Watering before, watering afternoon. All the same.
