Has anyone used turf reinforcement mesh on their course in areas where heavy cart traffic makes growing grass nearly impossible? What are the drawbacks? I would think golfers would be unable to hit off of it but, other than that, are there any other problems?

When the grass wears thin, the softspikes will catch it and create a tripping hazard. Had to deal with that after some tee slopes were sodded using big rolls and the contractor didn't remove the netting....what a PITA!

Do contractors ever remove the netting?

Yes. When told to do so and supervised during installation. It's not hard to do, but takes another person behind the machine pulling the net as it goes. This holds especially true with bermudagrass sod that is cut very thin with very little underlying soil.
