Hi, We are currently hollow-tining 419 fairways with a Ryan drag behind. The bermuda is JUST starting to come out of dormancy here in southern Spain. My question is this too early. The bermuda has the SLIGHTEST tinge of green.

The plan from clubhouse is to hollow tine, mow, topdress and then in a week or so do the first wall to wall with pendimethalin. My opinion is that we will take a long time to heal and every tine hole is a place for crabgrass and goosegrass to take hold.

We are still in high 40´s each night and have just broken 70 high over the last week. We began high season on 1st of March until May 15th. Average temp in March is 56F and it is 65F in May.

    Thanks for all input

I'd be more worried the Pendi won't let the new growth over the holes tack down and root in. Ronstar would be a better option.

Thanks Andy. Ronstar costs a fortune here in Spain. It is not possible. My first question to foreman who has been here for 26 years is how well with 419 cover over the bare spots treated with pendimethalin. He said no problem.

Goose and crab grass manage to break thru with the pendamethalin without hollow tining. With the scarring and 419 recovery slowed down by lower than ideal temperatures and pendimethalin I am concerned but the GM is happy with this plan. We shall see.

    Ronstar G has the
inhibitors of protoporphyrinogen oxidase mode of action.
    Pendimethalin is a meristematic
inhibitor that interferes with the plant cellular division or mito-
sis and cell elongation in the growing points of shoots and
    roots of susceptible weeds.

Andy, I was wondering why you think that the Ronstar would favor the 419 recovery more. Thanks again

I STRONGLY agree with. Andy. Play it safe.

Have you looked into Specticle. It has superior control for goose and crab at very low use rates. Better than Ronstar. Plus long lasting depending on rates.

Although the focus on this article is on spring dead spot recovery, it also mention recovery from traffic, divots, etc...The data showed no statistical difference between the control and the Ronstar applications, but significant difference between control and pendimethalin.

Don't get me wrong though, I love pendimethalin. It is a great product for landscape beds and fall and winter pre-emergent applications.

Would post-patent Oxidiazon(Ronstar) be more readily available than the brand name?
