For the bedknife I use a block of wood. I did this for years on ski edges too and they were ultra fine finish after stone grinding.
For the reels, the green handles it for me in about .7 seconds. The burr is rolled over the front of the land anyway so out of the cutting path.
Of course both are just my opinion and you'll get hundreds of those...
