Hi, I am thinking of whipping up a healing mix to speed hole cup recuperation. I am thinking very light dosage of urea with K and maybe some worm castings.

Does anyone do something like this? On these sites for Ryder Cup and USGA they say to apply water to hole cut.

I have never seen anyone putting water on hole cuts in the 1000+ courses I have visited over last 23 years.

Does anyone put water after sanding hole replacements?

    Thanks Michael

We put water on ours after replacing. Also some green sand, if needed.

There used to be a product called Nitamin that was nitrogen coated sand. It was made by Georgia Pacific. I haven't heard anything about this product for many years, but it had a very low analysis, from what I remember, 1-0-0. And I think they just claimed the 1 so because they were marketing it as Nitrogen coated sand and had to claim something. It may have been much lower.

No water, but a caution...we use dried green sand to seal the edge and top dress the plug. It does a very nice job on bent when temps don't get too high, but the colorant will superheat the area in the summer time. We don't use this in the heat of the season, but it works well when not in heat stress...no extra fert or water. Also want to verify that the sand specs match the greens mix. I would be concerned about putting circles of fert out there for inconsistent color and growth on the old plugs. Good luck.

We use water only during certain times of year, like a dry winter (southern california) where we don't really need to irrigate much. If we don't use water when changing cups then the first rain or irrigation will cause the dry plugs to sink a little.

Micheal, we have always watered the plug after changing. It rinses in the edge dirt. I would defy anyone without a trained eye to find yesterdays pin placement

We always use a little water. Used a "concoction" years ago, but it just left bright green spots all over the green. Shouldn't be an issue unless you are really tearing up the plugs when replacing or mending in the edges. Maybe a little touch of granular fertilizer could help.

Always use water in plastic ketchup squirt bottle. No afternoon dry out or shrinkage. As said above also helps to clean up around the edge.

Standard procedure at all TOUR events, especially if you are drying down the greens. On bermuda and paspalum, also water the area the new cup is to be cut, seems to help hold the OM together a bit better. A bit of stale mountain dew also helps hold the new cup edges together and maybe the sugar helps the cup the heal??

Same, same. Topdress, then water. Apparently, you didn't visit enough courses.

Dennis, I like the sugar idea, am thinking beer. In Ireland my first few years in golf they would use dregs from St James Gate Guinness factory in Dublin in topdressing for greens.

A pint of Tennants per sq meter was great but expensive. I was thinking really light dose of N and worm poop.

Steve, Thinking about it I would generally let supers get early morning out of way and make appointments for 10 ish so holes would have been already cut. Also a few hundred of these courses were in Ireland and England so they didn´t need to add water because rain was always only a few hours away.

Live and learn, thanks to all Michael

Speaking of concoctions, you might give this a try. I haven't tried it, and I'm sure quality varies from place to place, but looks like it should work.....

DON'T DO IT! Pete has obviously fallen victim (again) to the Church of Scientology. Some of the more dastardly uses and side effects:

    - Given to vicious dogs involved in recent deadly attacks.
    - Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere, and in hurricanes including deadly storms in Florida, New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern U.S.
    - in cult rituals
    - by the Church of Scientology on their members and their members' families (although surprisingly, many members recently have contacted DHMO.org to vehemently deny such use)
    - by both the KKK and the NAACP during rallies and marches,
    - by members of Congress who are under investigation for financial corruption and inappropriate IM behavior,
    - by kids who play Beyblades,
    - by the clientele at a number of bath houses in New York City and San Francisco,
    - by the semi-divine King Bhumibol of Thailand and his many devoted young working girls in Bangkok,

Aw Jeffie, One knows they left a mark when he's still discussed and bringing a chuckle to his fellow comrades, even after he has been gone.

Brings a tear to my eye just like the President had the other day.

Heck this reminds me of the old days when posts were hi-jacked regularly, man I miss the good old days.

I can´t get Mountain Dew in Spain. Could someone please buy me a case, open all the cans, wait 3 months and then send them to me?

I am like California climate. I have only irrigated 70 liters or 2.8 inches in 2 1/2 months and we have only had .4 inches of rain. The weather has been so warm and no wind that the greens don´t need water.

I watered with Fairy Liquid bottle the old holes on Friday to the dismay of my crew and will again tomorrow. The beer I am seriously considering for the sugar buzz as I wait for my Mountain Dew to arrive.
    Thanks Michael

What kind of cup cutter are you using? We have found the HIO cutter to leave a much tighter plug and it is even difficult to find the old hole location.

We too squirt some water on cup plug replacements in dry weather. I also add a small of wetting agent (penetrant usually) to the gallon jug that fills our quart squirt bottle. Helps keep plug hydrated since they tend to dry out later in the day when warm and dry out.

    Thanks to all,

Jack, we have 3 R&R manual lever models. The Par Aide Hole in One looks good. Plan on getting 1 and check it out.

Dennis, I will put a bit of Primer 604 in mix today. I put 5 grams of sulfate of ammonia in 5 liters of water for Wednesday with no burn. It takes about 125 holes to make a square meter. I am squirting all the old pin placements that still show. We only change 3 times per week with normal smaller Trent Jones greens. We are in low season with 120 scheduled today and probably 25 walk-ins so we get pretty banged up in 200 plus rounds per hole change and in high season it is 300+. If we changed more often there would be hole plugs everywhere.

    Un saludo Michael
