For you older folks, what are the older time chemicals no longer available that you used to use. Here are mine.

[u">Sarolex[/u"> This was a highly concentrated diazinon with diesel fuel as an emulsifier. It was used for worms, but had a very high rate for nematodes. I applied it as an apprentice/assistant and my superintendent was not familiar with it. It makes the turf look like astroturf even after watering it in. He came in a little late and freaked!

[u">Daznet[/u"> This was sprayed for mole crickets in the early 70's. It made the mc's pop out of the ground. I was on a seaside course applying that when a storm came in. I was 15yo at the time and the sea birds did not respond well to eating my dying mc's.

[u">Toxaphene[/u"> As I recall this killed everything. "That smell, that Toxaphene smell... It smelled like victory!"

[u">EDB, Nemagon[/u"> We used to hand inject this stuff with a little walker slider injector thing on greens and bunker noses for nematodes. Big machines would inject fairways and cut hydraulic tubings. We would find the hydraulic tubings with our bare feet and fix them with our bare hands.

If this post raises interest I will add more. I got into the biz before most of the good stuff was taken off the market.

Toxaphene, there is a blast from the past.
My first job (83') I was spraying some left over Toxaphene up into Cedars for spider mites, no mask ended up with a HUGE headache at the base of my skull! It's mode of action was to kill through central nervous system and guess where that is located in my skull?

If you have any that is labeled for use on "Golf Courses" in "Florida". you can still use it. If I am wrong, I'm sure Andy will correct me.

The only one of those I really miss is MSMA. The rest of that stuff is just too toxic and I'm glad its gone.

Many , many years ago I can remember spraying lead arsenate for poa in Kentucky. Supt. went out and bought everything he could from courses in the area. We had over a ton stocked up.

My understanding was lead arsenate was a herbicide, insecticide and fungicide all rolled into one. It would last for decades in the soil. I never used it but I know where to find 20 bags if I want to.

We used some old Calaclor ? out on our roughs at a couple of places back in the late 80's just to get rid of it. Also remember having some liquid blue color mercury, PNB? We would trade it for other stuff since we didn't have sprayers.

First stuff I remember spraying was Diazion before it was banned on golf courses, funny how home owners could still get it....

How about Lannate? Jerry Cheesman told us at Lake City to always have enough of this to spray greens in case of a worm emergency. I remember seeing golfers two holes over and downwind grab their heads from the "brain freeze" this chemical would give you then just keep right on going. Things are different now.

Sure miss Chlordane. Good for ground based bees, ants and anything else that crawled. Was legal for home owners for a few years after banned commercially.

Correct. For at least the next 12 days. It's illegal after that. Regardless of label. I still have about 3 gallons that I'm guessing will have to be picked up. Not much to spray with MSMA right now and I'm not gonna just waste it.

I'm a youngin', so I can only remember using these:

    MSMA
    Diazinon
    Mocap
    Nemacur
    Asulox on St. Augustine

I just heard Illoxan is being discontinued by Bayer. Gonna have to add that one to the list soon.

Illoxan? WTH? Only thing that works on goosegrass for me. :o

I used a lot of Asulox on Bermudagrass through the years. It smokes goosegrass (even big ones) and tropical signalgrass/bullgrass or whatever they are calling it this year. (20 oz per A, no adjuvants, every 7-10 days) It requires multiple apps but at that price just leave the booms on. I am not suggesting that anyone do this now, but the last time I checked it was not restricted.

Cadmium or Caddy as it was labeled
    PMAS or PMA10 mercury
    Chlordane...had a nice minty smell
Calochlor...more mercury. Mixing it with milorganite in an enclosed plastic tent with no protective. The tent was meant to keep the Calochlor dust from blowing away
    Merfusan...even more mercury
Lead arsenate....still have a 1 lbs bag on the shelf

The PMAS used to come in 1 gallon moonshine glass bottles. I know they were glass because one hit the floor when I tried to take it off shelf out in Kananaskis. The boss was greatly concerned with how much that jug cost. Very little concern about me being covered in it. Some good good sized blood blisters on exposed skin but other than that, I'm alive.

Lads, we are all lucky to be alive

After all the nasty stuff I was exposed to in the Coast Guard and now 20 years of golf course maintenance, well.......I've always tried to be careful except one time when The Hammer made me and the intern spread Nemacur late one afternoon in August. It must have been a million degrees inside that suit and we finally both agreed to take off our suits and finished the job (27 holes) in shorts and tee shirts.
Now, I've worn glasses since I was a young lad, but after that exposure, I didn't need my glasses for a week.

    Regards,

    Steve

While in college I worked with a spray tech who would tell stories about mixing a tank load with his arm, shirt sleeve rolled up so it didn't get wet. Those were the days before tank agitation. He told of spraying Lindane up into the pines and having it rain back down on his face without a mask because nobody wore masks back then. He said one time when he finally did start wearing a respirator that he hasn't cleaned it in years and when he finally decide to clean it it had beads of mercury rolling around in it.

MSMA is back on for atleast 3 more years, florida not included. The label has changed to not allow application to more than a 100 sq ft area or 25% of the total turf area. But, back on topic, MSMA, Sencor and Scotts DMC would kill dirt and if that combo didn't work get out the Triumph, because it surely would.

In the 50´s and 60´s there were 55 gallon drums floating down the Passaic river to Newark with all kinds of goodies from our favorite chemical companies. My aunts and uncles lived in Kearney and you could just about walk on the water and the smell would twist your head off.

Glad things have been cleaned up a lot.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it.

We bought an old time farm and in that part of the barn where treasures are found we also found a can of DDT.

I sprayed Oftanol at Turkey Creek CC in Gainesville, FL before it had a brand name (1980). It was delivered to the University of Florida in brown glass jugs with the disclaimer that if exposure should occur we don't what you should do about it.

My mole cricket application did not work one year and I was a young supt (1986). I told my chem rep that I was in trouble and he said a tank mix of Nemacur 3 Liquid and Oftanol was "the atom bomb for mole crickets". I had the entire course sprayed by a bulk applicator. He was right.
