   Who of you have a dog for the golf course? Do you own the dog or does the golf course pay for the dog? If the course pays, do you bring the dog home? What breeds are good to chase geese yet also good at home with kids? Do any of you use an insurance program for vet visits etc? What about using a breeder versus a shelter?

   We rescued a black lab with a little hound in him from a lady on Craigs List. He is the greatest dog you could ever hope for. He is the club's dog and stays at the shop, although I take him home occassionally. I have two young kids, 4 and 2, and he's absolutely great with them. He chases anything that moves which is great for geese although he gets some other critters here and there too. It took some time but he's really well trained now and the members love him. The club pays for all his expenses, food, vet, etc.
   
   I know a trained border collie or australian shephard or whatever would probably be more effective but I would recommend something like what we found.

   I currently have a 2 year old female chocolate lab. Caddie is highly motivated to chase the geese and lay around the shop when she is not needed. I take her home everyday and she is great with my 7 month lil girl. Having a dog around the course for the past 2 years has also boosted moral with the staff and members. She is loved more than anyone. I would recommend using an e collar for proper training. We have a member that is a local vet and he treats her for no cost.    The geese population on my course exploded about 6 years ago. I rescued a male fox terrier/border collie mix about 5 years ago who was actually the lone survivor of a litter of 9! He is our family dog but I mainly got his to chase the geese on my course. Great family dog and he loves to go to work with me to chase the geese! He put a huge dent in the geese population; I'm actually at a point where if the geese see my white truck within eye sight they fly off. We even made plywood cut outs in the shape and color of my dog and set them around pond edges and it was a kick to watch the geese come in for a landing only to be met with decoy that made them scramble outta dodge! The club has no ties or obligations towards the dog. If he gets injured while running the geese it's my issue. So far so good!
