Does anyone provide a paid lunch period? I inherited a paid lunch situation where I pay for 8 hours of work and only get 7.5. Thanks for the feedback?

Same here. Kind of some new ownership and that's what it states in the new handbook.

Thanks Brent. Seven hours sounds pretty good, but at my age if I eat lunch sometimes it makes me tired afterward. So, if you pay me for lunch, it's your fault if I get tired. I would then need a paid 45 minute to 1 hour paid nap. Hardly too much to ask. I'd be good for 5-1/2 to maybe 6 hours.

I knew of a private course where instead of a break after morning jobs they took a 20 minute lunch. Started at 6 off at 2 paid 8 hours.

Check your state law. back when I was in WA we had 23 min for lunch and one 10min coffee paid for. Was not great but worked out okay. This was better than the old way of 2/ 10 min coffee breaks and a lunch break because every one know every break takes 5 min before and 5 min after just to start moving.

I will say here we have a 45 minute lunch break which most guys do not finish, they get too itchy to get back to work. Only works well for those guys that run to McD's. 15 minutes of it is one of our paid 15 minute breaks, the other is taken at the end of the day.

One of our other courses just takes their hour all at once, they are father from the fast food.

We do not offer a paid lunch and I am not sure I would ever give that option unless mandated. I have a retiree that formerly owned an auto service center. He always paid his staff during lunch. All of the employees would put an order together at a fast food place and send one employee to pick it up. A few years back, the employee that went to get lunch got in an accident and filed a workers comp claim. The claim led to a permanent disability costing the owner of the small business a lot of money and time. If you are going to offer a paid lunch, you may want to think twice about allowing people to leave the property. It could open up a lot of extra liabilities.

The majority of our staff starts work at 5:00. They take their "lunch" at the conclusion of their first assignment for about 15-20 minutes. This is a paid break. They wrap up at 1:00 and are out the door.

As for leaving property, we make everybody clock-out. The exception to this rule is salary people. If an accident occurred, the trip would have to be for legitimate business reasons to be covered under workman's comp.

If a supervisor instructed an employee to go pick up lunch for the staff while on the clock, I can see this as being covered by workman's comp. I would seriously rethink this practice as well.

our policy is if you leave the property you must clock out. so I would say most if not all people just stay on site while they are on a paid lunch.

I remember when I worked at a couple of places, if people stayed on property they did not clock out for lunch, but we deducted the half hour for lunch from their time card. If they left property they clocked out.

Had some kids run to a fast food place and wouldn't get back in time, needless to say they got paid 7.9 or 7.8 hours instead of 8.

I did an internship at a resort where we got a free lunch. The full timers always looked forward to the holidays, they said the spread was pretty good from the extra food that didn't get sold to guests. We didn't get paid for time though.
