When hand sharpening the face of a bed knife what is the best stone to use if using a hand grinder?

Bedknife facing is typically done with a modified angle grinder that is specifically made for the task. It uses a sanding disc with a rubber or cushioned backing.

I use a small hand file every time my machines go out on the course when I bring them in for checking. You can get a bed knife facer from R&R its nothing more than an angle grinder with a special attachment to do the front face of the bed knife, but I prefer just using my hand file. If the hand file doesn't do the job then its time to take them off and grind.

If you have a steady hand you can do a good job with a nice angle grinder that is air operated using the roloc disc 36 and 80 grit. Inexpensive and easy to use. If you must have a fancy device, SIP makes one for the air grinder. We grind often and do not lap so for use we use a bedknife buddy. Nothing more than a plastic block that holds a section of file on a 6 degree angle that we run across our bedknives every time they come in. It's not a tool for facing if you just mowed through topdressing, its to maintain a crisp edge on the knife from normal mowing and in between grinds.

    Regard,

    Henry,

I know the file you are talking about, they are great. I'm having trouble fitting it in our 14 blade JD reels though. The close proximity of the blades, the chunk of file, it rides the blades it seems. Ours was from accuproducts I believe. any suggestions? Thought about cutting the file down in length a bit.
