Has anyone used vinegar as a substitute to phairway? My irrigation water in the summer has a ph of 8.2. There is a noticeable difference when its on as opposed to off. I understand why the turf is better but not sure if vinegar will have the same effect. The ph of phairway is 1 and the ph of 20% vinegar is 2 so I would use a lot more product. I think sam's club sells it for $80 for 55 gal but I'm not a membe so can't confirm. Best price I've found was $250 for 55 gallons in my quick search. I paid $12 a gallon for phairway last year and used 200 gallons. Phairway is in my budget all ready but looking for new ways to save the club money. What are the pros/cons that you guys see? I'm sure someone has tried it somewhere. Matt Plosila Gowanda CC

Matt, the pHairway is 10 times more acidic than the vinegar which leaves the vinegar more expensive by my quick calculation. I have never heard of anyone injecting vinegar in irrigation after 400 clients in 26 countries.

I would suggest buying 46 to 49% sulfuric acid and adding in urea when the all sectors of the course need nitrogen.

If you have multiple injection units than you can better accomodate nitrogen input to greens, tees, and rough /fairway areas.

In any case with generic sulfuric plus urea you save a pile of money. Whatever the pHairway vendors may tell you about monoproteic reactions, the head engineer of Agrium told me pHairway is generic sulfuric acid plus urea.

    Saludos Michael

ps vinegar made some darn good sushi from striped bass in Long Gisland though

Sorry it was lemon juice for the striped bass, we use vinegar for uncooked anchovies here in Spain, boquerones.
