Its almost time for greens aerification in Southern California & a part of my program is to incorporate new bentgrass seed to our poa/bent greens during this process. In years past I have used a combo of A4 & SR1150 which have provided improved putting surfaces. Now that PD seed is available I am considering this option either as a substitute to A4 or go 100% PD. Curious on what kind of results Supt's are seeing on their greens w/this seed.

    Mike,

NTEP studies have shown Pure Distinction to be a good variety, showing good color, turf quality, and disease resistance. In Massachusetts at our turf research facility we have an area managed at greens HOC with Pure Distinction and it is a resilient area with minimal poa encroachment, and overall produces a nice putting surface (our conditions and management practices are of course a little different than a traditional golf course). A noticeable characteristic of Pure Distinction is it's high density, which does make it a very good variety for putting surfaces. Most university/NTEP trials have found Pure Distinction to be a strong variety overall, maybe not the top performer but still very acceptable. I recommend checking out the NTEP trials if you haven't already as well as a 2011 report by Rutgers (link below).

They installed pure distinction at Santa Ana Country Club in Orange County last year as part of a complete renovation last year. As far as I know it has performed wonderfully. Superintendent Matt Marsh posted quite a few updates of the grow in on twitter @SantaAnaCCSuper. It may be worth your while to take a field trip over there or contact Matt.

I am in the process of constructing a new 18 hole facility and did not chose PD for many reasons. Dan Dinelli from North Shore CC in Chicago has had NTEP trials at facilty for a number of years and has excellent greens data available. I would suggest looking at his LinkedIn account where he has posted his latest data. Great stuff for helping to answer grassing questions.

Jim, which grasses did you choose?

I have a chipping green with PD that performs beautifully. However, it has zero tolerance for dollar spot which isn't much of an issue at greens height I would imagine. I will be using 007 in much the same way for a few reasons: not puffy/thatchy, not too dense where sand won't incorporate, great spring green up, tolerance of multiple mowing heights (greens, tees, apps, fwys) and outstanding disease resistance/tolerance across the board.
