Look at the picture of the dying White pines on page 50 of this month's GCM.
You will see a deciduous tree in the fore ground that can soon be dead from volcano mulching.
Mulch stacked up against the trunk base will heat up and scorch the cambium.
3" of mulch is enough but taper it to 1" right by the trunk.
