Speed Kills!
It's killing the game (my opinion any way), sorry, getting off my soap box.
When we want the greens a little smoother, we will topdress the week prior to an event and will if we have the staff, roll and mow the day of. We mow at .156 with a Toro triplex, use Primo, Sili-Kal-B and only when we have fallen off our verticutting program in the spring do we really hear anything about our speed. Penncross on USGA (mostly) greens in the transition zone.
By the way, worked at a college course in Northern Indiana many years ago, followed the same set up and maybe watered a little less due to less heat, and we never had complants about green speed, only difference we mowed with Toro 1000's at .156, triplex was set to .140. When I had students ask what our green speed was, finally got a stimp meter and we were around 9, plenty fast enough on those greens. Main thing they were consistent and smooth.
