Hi, Does anyone have experience please in the control of poa reptans in bentgrass greens ( Penncross )? The poa reptans grows faster than the Penncross during certain periods of the year creating bumpy roll.

    Climate is Mediterraean island.

    Thanks Michael

Hey Steve, bermuda on greens does not cut it here in Med climate. We have about the same temps as Tampa but no humidity. San Roque next to Valdrrama ( Mr. Patiño always thought bermuda would do well ) put in Tifeagle about 10 years ago on their new Perry Dye course and it was replaced within two years with bentgrass.

I can find very little on poa reptans after a few days of research. I have these two :

Effect of Paclobutrazol and Flurprimidol on Suppression of Poa annua spp. reptans inCreeping Bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) GreensAuthor(s): B. Jack Johnson and Tim R. Murphy and http://www.turf.uiuc.edu/hort436/Poa%20annua.pdf and both agree in that paclobutrazol is best to control poa.

It is not the percentage of poa reptans but its interruption of smooth ball roll.

I know you and many are disgruntled Champions, I am surprised that Morris did not stand up better to resolve issues. As Andy J says, it is tough to classify all in same boat, but initial contamination and mutation are different animals. In my opinion a stronger support should have come from turf supplier for their sake and their clients´.

I am afraid it is doom and gloom for all concerned.

See you one of these years Mike

I was just kidding man, I have no idea how to take poa out of bent, but I did take a weed class in New Orleans and I know there was some research on a new product that seemed to do that. Unfortunately, I can't remember who gave the seminar, but I want to say it was one of the PHd's from the Carolinas, you might do some searching there.
Unfortunately, nothing exists to take bermuda out of bermuda and we are having the same issues you are, Fortunately, my golfers are not good enough to tell the difference, for the most part.

    Regards,

    Steve

It is not to eradicate the poa reptans, it is necessary to control its growth rate. I use pendimethylene (sp) on my greens for pata gallina, bermuda, and paspalum contamination and they rolled as tournament condition all last summer.

I know that Velocity and Xonerate ( Hi Keith ) work quite well on all types of poa but my greens and these in Cyprus are a huge percentage of poa and no hope to get rid of poa.

Proxy and Primo have been tried but the poa reptans was still causing serious chatter.

Thanks Mike ( Steve, I know you were joking , but the Champion issue is no joke and San Roque were not laughing either after making the bermuda plunge. Our 419 fairways only really have 2 months of full growth. )

    Michael,
you may still want to look at Xonerate at the 1 oz per Acre rate it will not kill Poa but will slow it down in the spring and fall, mid summer it will damage Poa. The 2 oz rate will damage to kill and if used more than once a month to 6 weeks could cause problems. Some Growth Regulators are okay if not over used, but they slow everything down; (not a fan myself).

Michael, out here in california we have long since given up on eradicating poa on greens. As someone once said, before you can get rid of it, the poa has to die first- and that would leave us with very little to putt on and probably unemployed. To help out with the ball roll we do a lot of light verticutting and sanding. We also use an out front brush on the triplex daily when the seedheads pop up. Many use the primo/proxy program but I never could get the timing down and then came the elongation issue so I pass on that. Many also drop the height to assist in smoothing it out. Since spring seems to be the worst time, I adopted a March and May aerification schedule. Might as well do it when the greens are hard to keep good anyway.

Thanks Gus, some good tips. I am just trying to slow down the growth of the poa reptans, not eradicate any poa. The poa reptanss creates chattering like you wouldn´t believe. I can find very little info specifically about poa reptans.

    Thanks to all Michael
