Has anyone used Specticle as their pre-emergent in South Florida? I've been hearing a lot of positives about it, but now it seems a lot of "I know a guy who used it and..." comments are surfacing. Just looking to talk with someone who actually used it themselves, and what their opinion of it is. More specifically, how their turf handled the active during cold snaps.

Stay away. Most guys in my area who used had a lot of sleepless nights and VERY sick grass. I'd test and area and wait weeks to see if it messed with the turf- not worth the risk, IMHO

I wasn't going to use it until I spoke with my Bayer rep about it. He did say there were issues, but most if not all were related to applying on stressed turf from this past springs drought in South Florida, or sprayed on Paspalum, or sprayed at the 5oz/ac rate, or from overlap at the 5oz/ac rate or sprayed on new turf.

The label has been changed and Paspalum has been taken off.

I also spoke with a guy that has nicknamed it "Expect-to-kill" because he applied it to recently sprigged(10 day old) 419 and the sprigs didn't move after application. Just stayed on top of the ground without rooting in. He said he eventually sodded it. I can't say what the old label says, but the new one specifically says "ESTABLISHED TURF".

I spoke with my other Bayer rep yesterday as well. He basically said to go with the 2.5oz/ac rate now, and again in March for season long control. They have not seen any issues at that rate. Just water it in. I would also avoid spraying any new turf you might have. We ordered some and I am going to do a test spot next week and see how it goes.

If you have questions, call your Bayer rep. Mine has been honest with me the whole time and answered the questions I've asked. Better than going by hearsay.

I applied it this past June @ 3.125 oz/A and had no problems. I have since applied it at the 2.5 oz/A rate in late August for the areas that are notorious for Poa. I cant speak to anyone elses results but had no issues here on tifsport.

I know guys who will never touch it on bermuda or paspalum. October 15-17 I blanketed my place with the 2.5 oz rate. I skipped two holes that had some thin areas after consulting with my Bayer rep. I have yet to see any Poa or any other winter weed on those holes. The two I skipped I put out Monument and Barricade at label rates. The Specticle is outperforming the Monument/Barricade hands down with no yellowing, growth regulation or thinning in my Paspalum.

As with any new product, they have to work out the kinks. I wouldn't write if off completely from a couple guy's bad experieneces.

AGREED regarding the established turf. The "New" Pre-emergent products can be touchy. Use with care. Specticle and even more so with the Tower for those of us targeting the Doveweed epidemic.

Have any of you who used it noticed any post emergent control of perennial rye. I have heard mixing it with Revolver will take out existing ryegrass. We have areas we want to get back to 100% bermuda (419) and want to remove old rye. I would love to hear any success or failure stories.

We have used Specticle here in Hawaii with good success. Went out in May at 3.75 oz rate and saw no damage whatsoever(Bermuda and Paspalum) with great weed control. Especially Goosegrass, Poa annua and Pigweed. Followed up in September at 2.5 oz rate after verticut and droughty conditions. Only damage was to Common Bermuda as it took long time to heal from verticut. No damage to Paspalum, Hybrid Bermuda or Zoysia we have in roughs and fairways. I feel it was the dry conditions that caused the issue but isolated where I think salts had built up in heavy clay soils plus we were over due for Polyon fertilizer application. The weed control has been superior to our Ronstar applications we made on green surrounds and tee tops for Goosegrass and Poa annua. But like posts above don't spray on thin areas, overlap too much or spray without good soil moisture and healthy turf. I think 2.5 oz rate is good. Someone used it with Revolver and had great success eliminating Goosegrass as Post, so can be done. Good tool if used correctly and can really help the budget.

Never had a problem with Doveweed using Sencor @ 1oz/m over the top.

Hey guys. This is for those that have Bermuda rough and/or fairways. Last fall the previous super sprayed specticle and we are very clean minus a few areas that look to be prone for poa. So my question is for the guys who have used the product in the fall have you gone back out with roundup wall to wall? Or did you get good enough control just to go out and spot spray with roundup and not have any break thru before you put out your next pre-emerge app? I have the roundup in my barn already just really going back and forth on whether or not I want to go out and spray everything or just spot spray any insight is appreciated.

Depends on the rate....you may also want to check the Bayer assurance program. You may be in for some free product to follow-up.

Great product, but I found it works better if I modified my applications from more traditional pre-emerge program timing and played with rates here in the Transition zone. I go later in the Fall which carries me through the Spring then a light app in early Summer to get us through...much lower rates than I expected are very effective for us. Have skipped weak areas in our roughs in past which were loaded with poa in spring. Spot applications round up will be evident as it will delay green up in those areas. Don't expect to do any round up this winter. Have done revolver if I had spots but couldn't justify a blanket treatment of round up.

We have found the same as Keith. This is our 3rd year of using Specticle in the fall and we will not be using Roundup for our winter cleanup this year. There are just not enough weeds to justify it! Like Keith, we will be using Revolver, Monument, or something else that doesn't cause delayed greeenup to cleanup a few small areas. We use Ronstar in the spring.

We've sprayed 6.5 oz of Specticle the last two falls Last Fall we sprayed at the end of October combined with Celsius @ 3.2oz. and have zero weed pressure. The previous Fall '14 we combined it with Simazine in November when it went dormant and in the Spring we had some broadleaf weeds breakthru so we concluded we missed the some of the germination on the broadleaf weeds but this year with the Celsius clean, clean. So for us to, we haven't felt the need to spray Roundup the last two Springs since we started using the Specticle.
