Our Superintendent position is currently being evaluated to determine if we qualify for exempt status. I realize there are pros and cons to this change, and it may be a close call. How many of you are classified as exempt, and I would welcome any input into the discussion.

    Steve,

My position as Golf Operations Supervisor is a management position in the city and is considered exempt. Most of my time is spent doing budget, overseeing projects, doing some reports and managing the overall operations. I rarely do any actual physical work out on the course other than helping mow when we are short staff during aeration time.

Our Sr. Greenskeeper who is in reality the day to day on-course superintendent is an hourly employee and does get OT or comp time if he works more than 40 hours. He also has some oversight responsibility for our 9-hole course across town and spends 3-5 hours per week there meeting with the assistant who runs that operation day to day.

Steve, here with the City of Springfield MO, we are non-exempt and earn comp time when going over 40. We do not get overtime except for the rare holiday worked when we don't take off another day. The issues we do deal with at times is the amount of comp time we do earn. We can earn up to 240 hours but have been trying to avoid more then 160 the last few years. Actually last year I think I got to 120 and this year I was at just over 100 until this week when I used about 20. They always scream about us using it up quickly as we head into the winter but we are still using vac and floating holidays before Dec. 31st. I think there is some bookkeeping issue when it's on the books. We always have to be at 0 by the end of February. Our positions are a combination of management and working ourselves. We direct all employees under us, take care of paying most of our invoices, time-cards, schedules along with mowing, spraying, cup changing, irrigation repairs, but I believe we could be classified as exempt.

When I worked for a county in NJ, we over saw the complete facility and we were exempt.

I personally would prefer a bump up from our topped out salary of $38,000 and make me exempt. We did have a Golf Facilities Supervisor that did all of our budgeting and invoicing but he retired and that has fallen onto us. He was exempt.

Myself and my assistant are both exempt. My equipment manager who is also salaried like the two of us is non exempt. That determination came from our Comptroller/HR person based on education, job description and duties, etc.
