We have a toro workman every now and then start it up smokes like a blown motor. Next day not so bad. It seems like Something is getting stuck allowing too much fuel then gets unstuck and seems fine yet still a little smokey. All of our diesels are running a bit off there was some water in our fuel tanks and fuel filters were not changed for a few years. Also looking for an injector tester I could buy to see what all our diesel rigs spray patterns look like....any suggestions welcome.

I would drain some diesel from the bottom of the tanks, change fuel filters. Check your diesel pump filter for water where you fill up. Then throw in some sea foam in the tank if your wondering about the injectors.

Thanks Jon did not think about sea foam for the injectors. We drained and cleaned big fuel tank changed fuel filter in workman was so clogged no fuel came out petcock. I am thinking about an injector tester maybe eBay $150 just for peace of mind that the injectors are not a part of the problem.

Black smoke ? Also check governor shafts to see if it's moving freely . I've seen it happen on fairway machines in the past ( kubota though)

    Bob,
It was actually blue and gray smoke tore it down cracked head...Replaced head $2000 then over heated had bent two stage thermostat. Replaced $65 thermostat over heated factory thermostat would not open replaced again another $65 thermostat water is moving when it opens but now clutch or gear problem won't move. We put away til Monday then back into it. May still be over heating but had to cut test short when transmission problem started.
