I thought this has been discussed, but only found a brief conversation about vinyl guard. I am considering doing our flag sticks, but mine are all tapered. I know they say you can do tapered but my concern is it might be a little more difficult and they may not turn out that great. Has anyone done tapered flag sticks and how did they turn out? Also, are you using vinyl guard every season?

    Thanks,

    Andy

We did ours this winter and they turned out fine. It takes a little more patience as they have to shrink more at the tapered edges.

I use vinyl guard and will continue to use it instead of buying new sticks every year. Its worth every dollar!!

We started using vinyl Guard this year on our bunker rake handles and also put a hot pink over an older set of tapered sticks for ladies events. It does take more time to do the tapered sticks as the product must shrink more but it does work. The hot pink is not thick enough to cover up the black/white stripe on the stick so you can see it after shrinking but it does not look that bad. The youtube videos show them doing it in a couple minutes but it took us around 9 minutes to do a rake handle and 10-12 minutes to do a 7.5' flag stick.
I hope it will last at least 3 years for us before we have to redo. Time will tell.

We have tapered sticks and have used vinyl guard every year for the last four years. You can't beat it for taking the abuse. I have changed out the ferrules once to keep them like new. Still much cheaper than buying new sticks every three or four years.

Is vinyl guard USGA accepted? Any concerns with that topic? (i.e. needing to use un-vinyl guard sticks for tournaments and so on?)

Has anyone used the vinyl guard diamond reflective tape on flag sticks for the laser link yardage guns. If so how well did it work and how long has it lasted. THanks for the help.

    Hi Tim,

We have Vinyl Guard reflective tape on pins for 2 full seasons (April-November). The tape would possibly last longer but the underlying Vinyl Guard gets beat up so we change it out requiring new reflective tape. The tape works well with most yardage guns but we also screw in a prism reflector in the top of the flag stick to make it easier to get a quick yardage reading.

    This is what I use:

    http://www.reflectiveshapes.com/V98-Conformable-Prismatic-Reflective-Tape-30-Foot-Rolls-v98-30.htm

    4" White
Cut off enough to slightly overlap. Roll onto flagstick (do not pull on tape while applying or edges of tape will peel up once relaxed). Let set in room temperature or warmer for a couple days...done.
One year so far and I have not needed to replace any tape.

One of my members brought out some Red, white, and also Blue Reflective tape for our yardage markers on our par 5 holes so he could shoot the distance for his last shot to the greens. I had not thought of this before he did it but it woulds great and turned out to be a really good idea.

I did something similar with yardage tags, would go as far as 290 or so, even though they couldn't rach the green, allowed them to pick a club to lay up with and still have a full swing into the green. I like that 100 yard wedge shot myself.
