anyone ever used those brushes that replace the reels, for picking up sand after topdressing or aerification on greens....never known anyone to use them, just curious if they're worth a shot?

    thanks,

    nick

We use them in a set of dedicated Jac GK4 reels, they work great. We like them because they pick up the larger size sand particles and still allow the the majority of the topdressing material to work into the canopy. We are able to get out of the sand reel stage MUCH sooner. Note that we don't use them in place of a drag mat, just to serve as sort of a "pre-sand reel" that allows us to return to good cutting units much quicker.

We use them after dragging plugs in after we aerify and after dragging topdressing in. We also use them after the verticut ahead of the mower.

    Bob and John,
I've tried them but I didn't have any luck with them. We set them up according to the recommendations from the manufacturer. I believe they came from R&R as they were here, on the shelf, not set up and had the directions for set up. I recall questioning the success of them at the time because the set up didn't make sense to me or the mechanic. I am curious on how you had them set up?
    Thanks,
    Chris

The brushes we use is a system that slides into our stock Jac reel housings. There are 4 straight "brush bars" mounted similar to a reel (rather than a cutting edge, we have brushes). We also still utilize the bedknife and baskets. We would then set our heighth of brush just a touch lower than our heighth of cut. For instance if we are mowing at .150, we might set the brushes to .130-.120 range. Doing this we have great results picking up the courser material that our first few mowings would have picked up. Hopefully this description wasn't more confusing than helpful...

    Thanks Bob,
You make perfect sense. I have the confidence to give them another try now. Thanks, Chris

Ours are and old set of Toro 4-bolt reels. Just like Bobs there are 4 brushes. Set them up the pretty much the same way Bob sets his. We used old bedknives ground down and the brush around a sixteenth from the knife. We also use a swagged roller on the front.
