Today I had the unfortunate lightning strike at my course....Took out the Irrigation central, radio remote, phone system, computer, and the weather station...

So what weather stations is everyone using since my Davis Weather Monitor II is no longer available...I'm looking for the basics, rainfall, temps, barometer, anemometer...

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

We have this as an alternate weather station. It is connected to WeatherUnderground.com via an IP address and uploads weather data automatically. We have also added a webcam that can also be viewed via the WeatherUnderground site. We can view our weather anywhere with internet access as well as view our webcam from the same site. I highly recommend this system.

Or, you can get this system. The difference is this system is connected to your computer, and your computer must always be on in order for the data to be uploaded. Cheaper, requires more work, but just as good.

If you order one of these systems, don't be afraid by the quality of material. They are cheaply made with all plastic components, but hey, for the price, they can't be beat.

Davis still have a lot of good cheap stations other than the monitor 11. I would look at them. Most of your hardware should still work in conjunction with any of them.

We have the Davis Vantage Pro 2 weather station. It does all we need and has been accurate for three years for everything from ET to rainfall and wind.

I am not at work so I do not hve the exact details but when my PC is online it reports the weather data to a citizens weather network so I can see from anywhere what is happening at the course. I could probably do the same with a remote hookup to my pc but this was free and I can view mine or neighboring stations.

I got ours from Gemplers. http://www.gemplers.com/product/125095/Vantage-Pro2-Cabled-Weather-Station but they are readily available.

    Andy,

If I read correctly the 2080 (if I remember the number) has a LCD screen to look at and then a USB port to download data. Does this still mean you need to have the computer on 24/7?

I like the Davis on David posted, with it's ET monitoring.

    Thanks, Mel

    Mel,

If you are simply just wanting to have the data stored on your own computer for your own use, the 2080 will do it just fine, and cheap. The other one I listed connects directly to a router and has it's own IP address, and is capable of uploading to weather sites such as Weather Underground.

I am looking for user information on two different weather station models. If anyone is using these models please let me know the likes and dislikes with the one you are using. One is the Watchdog 2900ET and the other is the Davis Vantage Pro2. Thank you and I appreciate your time.

    Brian,
We have had the Davis Vantage Pro 2 for 3 years and like it. We added the radiation sensor to allow it to compute Evapotranspiration rate and it matches real close to the daily report I get from the University.

I do have it set to download information to the NOAA through the Citizens Weather Observer Program. By then going to their website I can see exactly how much rain our station had along with other area weather observers results. It is handy with spotty thunderstorms that may drop a inch at my house but nothing at the course so I know if I should change irrigation cycles or not.

The only problems we have had so far is leaves in the rain collector from a russian olive. The tree was too close to the building anyway so we cut it down.

We have it mounted on a tripod on the roof of the shop to get above the trees and buildings for a accurate wind speed reading.

We spent roughly $350 on an Ambient Weather weather station and connected it to www.weatherunderground.com. We use the website to compare our data to the two weather stations we have connected to our irrigation system. We also added a webcam that is linked to our page on Weather Underground. Only thing our station does not do is compute ET. But, tracks all other data instantaneously.

I am looking into getting a weather station, one with a pc interface. Can some of you give me some insight on your experiences with weather stations at your facility. How much do you rely on them? What types of decisions do you make based on the data? How useful is the history data? Etc. Obviously I know some of the answers to these questions but some real world experience would be helpful. I'd like some ammunition when I go to the club to make a pitch why we should get one. Thanks!

I also use a lacrosse and use it to collect data and get a local temp, humidity, wind speed, and precip.

Nothing fancy but does what I need it to.

I have a Davis Vantage Pro 2. I collect data on all the usual things I need here. I wish I would have gotten the sunlight sensor to measure evaporation though.

Easy to install. I also have it hooked up to Weatherunderground on the net. That way I can remotely check it from home, and other can see what its doing at the course.

Good luck. I'd buy it again.

Doug, The sunlight sensor is easy to add at any point as we added it after two years.

We also have the Davis Vantage Pro 2 and it works great for us. With the romote access I can see rain amounts from home to determin if I should come back to turn off the system or open dams etc.
