    Hi all,

Quick question, how many of you are using heat tolerant blues on your course? Where might you be using them.

    Thanks!

Since no one else will say it, I will...

    In the heat.

    Or where they're tolerant.

    Mel,

I slice seeded into a hodgepodge with the thermal blue from Scott's several years ago. I'm not certain the return on investment was there. Not sure how heat tolerant it is unless it was in a full stand of thermal blue.

It was a bust in Texas a few years ago.

what kind of heat are you talking about? are you well drained, shaded or full sun, exposed or protected? I have a few KBG's that do just fine in some pretty good heat situations, at least what I would consider high heat. If conditions are similar, I'll grab a bag tag and rattle them off. Most of ours were chosen from salinity testing as well.

    Mel,

I think your first challenge will be to find a variety of Kentucky bluegrass that will establish. If anyone has had success with establishment, other than on bare ground or through a complete renovation, I'm all ears.

We're talking transition zone heat; we are getting ready to put out our new sod bid and were just discussing the possibility of putting heat tolerant blue/fescue sod on the mix. Question being are our sod growers even growing it. Also part of that equation is sports fields and other park areas, plus public works. I'm just trying to gather more information, trying not to be the big dummy in the room.

    Kyle,

Good idea about checking my labels, I'll dig them up and see again what's in them.

Ron good point, we are working on establishing some turf plots off to the side of our maintenance building, that would be a good place to try.

    Thanks!

    Mel,
I have had pretty good luck with Barebrugs HGT and their RTF Fescue blends. Last fall I resodded 2 green surrounds and I have had a test plot for 2 yrs now. I bought my sod from Greenfield Turf in Cape G. Let me know if you would like to know any particulars.

    Thanks Ryan,

I wonder if they have ever bid on our proposals, I know Select Turf and Spring River have been successful bidders before.

My green banks is where I would like to see some more Ky. Blue, but we only have full circles on our greens, I'm afraid we really don't have the irrigation resources, but wondered if the heat tolerant type could survive as well as our fescues.

Ron, we have messed with some seed before and will look at it again as well. Sod only came up in conversation because our current contract will run out this spring and as we were reviewing it we were putting our 2 cents in for comments and improvements of the contract. But I thought I would ask how much was being used in the field and I know seed is always an option in other situations.

    Thanks!

    Mel,
Not sure how often you run the overheads in summer. I have noticed HGT takes less water than most blue's do. Perhaps with a little hand watering to get it through it would be fine? Gary down at Greenfield says it took 1 in./week in the sod field. He would have additional info. He loves talking about that grass fyi.
