It's been a bad summer for all of us this year. This year was the 1st time I lost some turf on fairways and some greens. We have Kentucky Blue / Rye Mix in fairways and it seems where there was POA it didnt take the heat well. I cut back the mowing on fairways and raised the H.O.C on greens. We solid tined greens / topdressed them and on Fairways we Solid tined them to. I was wondering what suggestions anyone else has on how to alleviate this in future and what other procedures to try to get the turf to recover?

    Thanks

There's 3 things that come to mind for me on this.

    1. Try to reduce poa populations with fall overseeding.
    2. Pre-stress conditioning. Don't water much in those first couple hot spells of the year.
    3. Work hard on the irrigation system. Coverage counts.

My two cents, I hate to see a thread unanswered.

    Josh,

We went to venting greens every 10 days with needle tines(sometimes 1/4" tines). Substituted rolling for mowing, raised the hoc, and spent alot of time dragging a hose. Might want to consider skipping the topdressing in the extreme heat. We also try to run the turf dry in the spring but mother nature usually works against us.

Thanks for the input. I will try rolling more than mowing in those types of conditions. I raised the height of cut and it still seemed to scalp from the puffiness. Everything now is coming back slowly but I never experienced those type of conditions for that stretch of time. I also will drag a hose to get the dew off to dry the grass quicker. Again thanks for the feedback.
