Well Alabama literally kicked arse yesterday on national signing day. Perhaps the most dominant day in recent memory of one school finishing #1 in 4 out of the 5 major recruiting services. All you can say is wow! Texas was #1 in the Scout.com service and second in two others. Mel's Noles had a great day as well as FSU cleaned up as well. Just waiting on the qb from Ala to ink on the dotted line. Texas did swoop in and steal and long time LSU pledge but hey siging day is like October in election years.......be ready for lots of surprises. But these guys are like handicaps........it only predicts the potential of the individual........not actual performance. Four years down the road is a long long time in football time.

I try not to pay too much attention to NSD. I hate all the comments on the local sports boards from yahoos that get all fired up when some 4 or 5 star either signs up or defects at the last minute. I also can't stand all the self important grandstanding by some of these kids, none of whom have ever played a down in college football nor will they likely contribute to their future teams for a couple of years.

Many of these kids never pan out, we had a top 5 recruiting class a couple of years ago at UT under Kiffin, including the #1 recruit. That kid transferred out and is actually not playing football anywhere now. Of that class only a couple remain. Dave you're right, the stars only indicate potential, it's up to the kids and coaches to develop that potential.

I am a little concerned about our LB depth, however. We had four very highly regarded recruits that pledged to UT, with only one actually signing with us. Not surprising since we switched defensive staffs at the last minute due to some of our coaches being hired away. But we're switching to a 3-4 and we need some bodies at LB no matter who they are.

Gus UT did snatch away a WR we thought we had a great shot at. He had made his last visit to BR last weekend and was hosted by Zach Mettenberger our QB to be. Patterson was the highest ranked juco coming out and we needed a big tall WR but it was not to be. He obviously prefers orange to purple and gold.

Ron I belive Alabama signed 26........we signed 22

So here is the oversigning issue by the numbers. Alabama might be the worst oversigning offender.

By NCAA rule a school can only award 85 scholarships per football at any given time.

In the last four years Alabama has signed 103 recruits. Nebraska 79. That difference is enough to field another entire offensive and defensive unit and some change.

To oversign in the Big Ten a school is required to petition the conference beforehand. Even at that, a school can only oversign by three.

This is entirely the reason for SEC dominance over the past 10 years.

The questions then become, is it okay for public institutions of higher learning to skirt the rules and behave in an unethical manner towards student athletes in order to gain an edge?

And what happened to the 18 student athletes that Alabama had awarded scholarships to that are no longer on the team?

I'm sure some left for legitimate reasons. But we all know Saban will win at all costs. And he's great at it.

Ron I know this past summer at the AD and Presidents meeting in Destin, Fl they voted not to oversign. The only legitimate explanation is they think they have some non qualifiers and went ahead and signed them anyway. LSU had one Top 150 recruit that was a non qualifier and they did not sign him on Wednesday. I also think Miss State oversigned with 28.........the only two schools in the SEC that did so as of yesterday.

The best recrutiing year in forever for FSU and not a peep from the #1 Noles fan in the country Mel W. III

We were bombarded by the press up here with the signing of the number 1 player going to Mizzou, heck they even have billboards and t-shirts with MIZ-DGB on them.

Plus I think I have been desensitized to recruiting class ranks, just because the Noles have had top ten classes, heck top 5 classes for I don't know how many years in a row, and it hasn't played out on the field yet. I'll get fired up when we are kicking butts and taking names in September..... besides we have March Madness to look forward to.

It is interesting that Alabubba continues to oversign despite the new SEC rule of no more than 25 signees. What will be even more interesting is whether or not offering a 4 year sholarship, which was put forward by the NCAA but rejected by more than 3/4 of the schools will eventually give some of the schools doing it an advantage down the road (I believe just a few big 10 schools are offering it). One would think the stability in a 4 year offer would be an effective counter punch to the oversigning schools that must cut or otherwise rid themselves of players each year to stay at 85.

Cannot disagree with that Gus..........it puts a little more pressure on the recruiting process if you have to live with a kid for 4 years instead of the current 1 year. That's how it used to be..........a grant in aid was a 4 year obligation.

The worst thing about Alabama's class this year wasn't the oversigning stuff (I'm numb to that by now), but Saban pulling scholarship offers from kids that were already committed. What a piece of garbage. Don't get me wrong, I love watching Alabama play; their style of football is beautiful to me. But leaving these kids out to dry is bush league.

As for the rankings, I've seen a bunch of 2-star players becom NFL talents, while 5-stars don't do a thing. It seems the 5-star guys are more division-1 ready, but don't have a much higher ceiling, while the lower rated kids are raw and untapped. Prime examples; Ernie Sims and Chad Greenway. Sims was THE MAN coming out of HS, had a solid career at FSU, and became a pretty good pro. Did he ever truly progress though? Greenway, meanwhile, played 8-man FB in South Dakota, was moved from QB to LB at Iowa (while gaining about 40 pounds), gets drafted by the Vikings and becomes a Pro-Bowler.
