Here we go again. Low snow so far again this winter and some of our culverts that run under cart paths and other areas are starting to freeze/back up and bleed onto the golf course turf. Any ideas of how to keep them from doing so and keep water flowing through them. This started last week into this week with highs the last 3 days at 0 and lows around -25. A deeper early winter snowpack and not frigid negative temps for days would have helped but the weather hasnt been to normal the last few years. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks

All you can try to do is take a digging bar and break up the ice near the openings on the drain sides of the pipes and even do the other side if you can get to it. It will help move some water for awhile until it refreezes. I did it last week here on the course in the Chicago area as we were expecting a warm up and heavy rain. I also made sure any leaves or sticks caught up in or near drains were removed also. Rake out what you can get to and hope for the best, mother nature is in control of the temperature, but if you can get it moving some it will stay open for awhile to reduce the level some. We came through the big rain and thaw well, now refrozen and expecting single digits and hopefully some snow later this week or next! Come on Canada Send in some of the good stuff!
