We had the same problem many years ago. We tried different spark plugs and we rebuilt the carburetor with very little difference. We ended up replacing the carburetor and gaskets and we started using Star Brite Star Tron Enzyme Treatment and we noticed a huge difference with all of our older engines and how they run. The enzyme treatment is to combat the ethanol issue plaguing most older engine fuel issues. Also, always check your air filter. Once we had a problem with it sputtering and found out air filter was filthy and preventing motor from breathing properly.
