I would like to hear pros and cons concerning cross-tines and bayonet tines for venting greens during the heat.
I would also like to hear how other superintendents are venting their greens (i.e. frequency, depth, etc.).
Any info would be of help.

Are you a private or public course? The reason I ask is something I do is we purchased the R and R Spiker for a triplex a few years ago. We go out on an as needed bases throughout the summer before the mowers. This may not work as well as you want for "venting" but you can add different depths on tines. Our tines go in about 1 1/2 inches and work fantastic for the upper layer to breathe and help with compaction in that area. Also helps with water infiltration.

I have in the past used solid tines twice a summer, once in about July, and the other late august/ early September to allow the greens to breathe, but different course, different budget. We used needle tines and we did 9 holes one day, 9 holes the next and just rolled after and the player didn't mind one bit.

    Hope this helps.

hydroject or needletine at least every three weeks. During summer months can be as frequent as every week depending on golf calendar and weather. Try to pull 3/8" core on 3x3 spacing at least once during summer but not always able every year.

I love my bayonetts. You can run them, roll and mow with virtually no disruption and you have a fair channel for air/water movement. I FEEL like the opening will be there longer with my bayonetts as opposed to the cross tine. Notice i put 'FEEL' in all caps there. Would be intersting to know if anyone has any real data on that???
