We are currently shopping for new maintenance buildings. We are currently using 2 doubledecker bank barns that were used for the dairy farm that used to be on the property way back. The barns are falling apart and we are looking into new. We currently have approximately 8,000 sq ft of space, but a lot is wasted space from the old feed troughs. How much square footage are your maintenance buildings for an 18 hole golf course?

We are getting ready to start construction on a new maintenance facility, for a private, 18 hole course. We will be putting up 2 - 60x100' buildings. One will house the offices, lunch room and shops, the other will be cold storage for equipment.

    Have fun.

I've been going through the process of building a new maintenance facility since ours burned. If you are interested during my research I came into contact with a professor out of Florida who gave me a powerpoint presentation he made concerning the development of a maintenance facility for a course in his state. It is a facility for a high end 36 hole club, but the information on what things they were looking for helped guide me in determining what types of spaces should be included and what size they should be.
In regards to actually figuring the size for your equipment storage area, I looked up all the dimension of the equipment fleet we would need to maintain the course and calculated each ones sq/ft, added them up and that resulted in a rough size would need to be used.

If you are interested in the powerpoint, contact me and I will see if I can find it.

A couple of years ago I did a new maintenance compound, I started with a list of all the equipment we had and what there foot print in the shed would be for parking, I then factored in as best I could what we might add to the fleet in the future (leaf Vac, extra transport buggies etc). I then basically sketched out where everything would go when it was parked. I added the staff canteen, toilets, showers and office to one end of the building. On the other end I put in the space for the mechainc(lift, grinders, store room for parts etc). Outside of this I added the fuel and chemical stores with the washpad. The shed flows well as the mechanic has plenty of space and all machines have to drive past his area as they come back in. Everything has it own spot and the transport buggies which are generally first out and last in take up the center passage of the shed. We are an 18 hole private course with up to 9 staff. The shed measures 40 foot by 135 aprox. The only equipment left outside are the tractor trailers (which are stored in the covered sand bay during the winter months)

I don't know what that square foot number should be for your course but I can tell you we nearly all make the mistake of not asking for everything we need. Our shop is just under 12,000 square feet and is pretty functional. We were able to design it ourselves so most all needs were covered. Go for the most size you can possibly get. You will always be able to utilize it. Don't cut corners and just think that a smaller size will do. Go for broke!

    Paul:

I work with the McMahon Group, our golf division plans and programs maintenance facilities. I also will be presenting a seminar on "Planning and Programing the Turf Care Center", for the 3rd year, at the annual conference and show. Give me a call or email at your convenience and I'll give you some info on what you may need. We have planned well over 30 Turf Care Centers in the last 8 years.

    My best, Mike

    Paul,

I would recommend Mike Vogt's seminar during the show. Lot of good discussion and you might pick up a few things you might not have thought of otherwise. Will be (hopefully) begin construction on a maintenance complex in 2016, and the seminar has helped me prepare.
