Wondering when is "too late" to punch greens in Montana. temps are starting to drop and winter seems just around the corner.

I would also like to hear thoughts on this. I'm in the sand hills of NE. The owner was hoping to wait until late part of October so it doesn't interfere with golf play. It doesn't seem like it would recover very well right now.

If you're in an area with the potential for open, windy winters I wouldn't even consider it. You'd be better off spending your time and resources on topdressing the greens in for winter. The risk of desiccation vs the minimal benefit from one aeration is too high. It's better to have greens in the spring that are alive and then manage them from there.

Several years ago, I decided to punch early October in western ND. The climate changed from warm and nice growing conditions to cold and windy. Daylight isn't long enough now to grow or heal in very rapidly, and one wouldn't want to push them and be over succulent while trying to harden off. Water availability is a constant issue if you are worried about making ice the next morning.

Overall, it cost me a little the next spring. We did something different a few years in a row following if we had the labor, which was pulling a 1/4" plug, only 1" deep, then topdressed and drug in with some better results. Now, we simply topdress frequently and lay a good heavy one down right before blowout. As Ron said, good grass in APril is better than weak grass.
