I live in Minnesota how does everyone feel about a late fall application on tees and greens.? Putting the application down in late October early November . Will it help in the spring or is it a waste of time???

I do a late app of AmSulfate to my greens, tees, and fairways. I did it last year and in the spring I had bent growing and spreading while the Poa was still just sitting there. I'm sold on it and it is pretty cheap. I put it down the day or 2 before I blow out my irrigation system. There is some good research articles on it but I don't recall from what university.

We apply Ammonium Sulfate at a rate of 1 lb N/M on tees, fairways, and roughs and 0.5 lb N/M on greens each year around Thanksgiving. We use a 190 SGN product to go wall-to-wall on everything except for greens and and a 100 SGN product on greens. The application is timed so that top growth has all but stopped but, there is green tissue that is still photosynthesizing carbohydrates which for us equates to about the week after Thanksgiving. Typically we are either closed or in the process of closing when we make the application. Like Andrew said, it's a relatively cheap application and even if you only do tees, greens, and fairways you will get a lot of value out of the application.

Here is an article by Dr. John Street at Ohio State regarding late season fertilization.

John has been doing work on late season fertilization for over 25 years and can offer loads of information if you wish to contact him.

    I hope this helps.

You may also want to look into the work Dr. Soldat has been doing at the University of Wisconsin the past few years regarding late fall feeding. Very good stuff and may make you think twice about your timing and amount of N.
