I have the world best question  My greens average between 50-80% Poa, and the rest is Bent (and a mixture of several varieties). I have been trying to get the ratio of Bent higher but with little success. So I am thinking of just let the Poa become the main grass, and kill the Bent,,,,yes I said kill the bent!! With this being said, and I can't believe that I said it, does anyone have any ideas how to slowing eliminate Bent grass from Poa? I feel that if I have 100% poa greens I will have a smother and faster putting surface and I can cut of the expense of using Cutless and other products to control the poa. Is this a really crazy idea or is it possible that someone else has done this? Or maybe its time to retire. :o

100% Poa greens are the absolute without a doubt best putting surfaces on the planet. How do you get there? Time I guess.

We used to have the same issue is southern Maryland. What we did was we began to to our end of season (we aerify twice a year) in August. The greens recovered a little quicker, and our poa was not able to handle the temperatures. We have Penncross greens and we keep our program the same each year.

We also mow our greens at .130/.125 during the season. We have had great success since we don't open the holes up in the fall.

As far as putting goes, both grasses can be great. I love Bent, and I have played on Poa greens. During the heat of the season in our area Poa would be a nightmare since we are a public course.

    Hope this helps.

You can't retire yet, I still need to play your course and you have to teach me how to ski. Come to my course I can show you how to kill bentgrass atleast on one green with great success. Thank god the green was 80% poa.

You could spray Embark T&O when you know you're going to have a warm day followed by a frosty night - bent grass no likey likey. Learned that the hard way.

Max is right. The best greens in the mid-atlantic are the old clubs with pushed up, Poa greens. I think extremely low mowing heights, slightly higher pH levels, and some winter cultivation practices would all hasten Poa encroachment and give you the good, perennial Poa. Kenneth Ingram, UMD
