I know Acelepryn has a wider application window compared to other grub control products, but do you all think it might be a little late to make an application for this season?

This would be in the mid transition zone area for fairways consisting of Bermuda. We have made our greens, tees and green banks application already back in May. Grub populations have been fairly low the past few seasons, and the last grub application on our fairways was two summers ago.

Another question, for those that have been using Acelepryn regularly on greens, have you noticed other insect issues that our old insecticides had been controlling but Acelepryn might not be? I have had ant issues this year.

    Thanks!

    Mel,

From everything I've read and been told it needs to get applied well in advance. I would think it's to late down there. Probably to late up here in Maine even. We're starting to see European Chafer adults, and it won't be long until JB adults emerge. I use it on greens as well and haven't had any insect issues with the exception of ants like you.

I use it here in western NY and would say it's definitely too late here. I apply at the 16 oz rate in early spring for ABW and get season long control of every major insect in the area except ants. There is no activity on ants which I also have problems with. I've been using triple crown for ants with acceptable control. I've thought about skipping the acelepryn and just using triple crown since I have to spray for ants anyway but this is my first season using triple crown.

As with above, yes too late for Acelepryn. We have been using it wall to wall here for about 4 years. Were having ant problems on greens so actually pulled it from greens, tees, and fairways this year. We spray Greens and Tees with Meridian and Scimitar for ants anyways (multiple apps) so no need for scimitar and are spraying Merit on Fairways tomorrow with our wetting agent app. Was a way to save a couple bucks. We use it in the rough since we spray a pre-emerge and Acelepryn in rough in Late March this year (usually early April) and don't fertilize our rough until late July (after Merit window for us). So if you have Acelepryn on the shelf save it for next year!

Merit has that big of a window? For grubs? I thought the Acelepryn window was bigger then the Merit window, we have the Merit option as well. New budget year starts on July 1.

Since our grub populations have been down, and heck we didn't start putting grub control down on fairways until only 4 years ago anyway, lack of high beetle activity, greens/tees covered, I might skip the grub control then, and just go with straight fertilizer.

I will do some label reading again, then decide on my applications.

    Thanks!

Too late for Acelepryn to catch most of target pests, generic Merit would be better option in my opinion and save you $. But, do you really need to treat? I've only ever spot treated with Dylox in early fall and rarely more than an acre or two on our Bermuda fairways. Usually its Green June Beetle grubs that leave mounds. I haven't seen significant damage from other white grubs to justify broadcasting preventative insecticides on our Bermuda. Is that not the norm? With generic imidacloprid being so affordable, its not necessarily just because of cost I haven't treated. As for the ants...I'm speculating here, but its possibly cyclical, weather, or combination as I'm seeing the same thing and have heard similar from neighboring courses. I do use acelepryn on our cool season course because we were seeing diminshed efficacy after using Imidacloprid for over a decade, and I was uneasy with even the possibility of affecting bees. We started acelepryn in roughs first thinking we never had anything flowering in the fairways, but now treat fairways too.

My understanding is Acelyprin can be applied earlier because it has a longer residual. Merit can be applied later but if its applied to early in the year, it wont be active later

Thanks all for the answers. Below is what I remember reading on the labels for both Acelepryn and Merit, causing me to ask my questions. Rereading again, looks like maybe a late May/early June application of Merit, might be my best application, for both cost and control. We won't see great damage on our Bermuda, but we will see some, especially on tees, we don't see a lot of damage in our cool season roughs, mostly because we don't have too many skunks? I know it sounds crazy but we have people with a Champaign taste despite our beer budget, and the other reason to apply preventively is if we do get a bunch of grub damage and we didn't make an application to control them, everything we do in our programs comes under question. But I think if we make an application every 3rd year and don't use bag traps, we can keep our populations down and just scout with Dylox and don't apply the day before ladies day.

    Thanks again!

    APPLICATION TIMING
White Grubs: Apply ACELEPRYN® from early April to early September for preventative and early curative control of all
the major white grub species infesting turfgrass. The need for an application may be based on historical monitoring of
the site, previous records or experiences, current season adult trapping or other methods. The higher rate listed for white
grub control in Table 1 may be required [for early season (April and May) applications where a long residual is required or]
in late August or early September when less sensitive mid-instar grubs are present at the time of application. Irrigate turf
immediately after application or allow rainfall to move the product into the soil.

Do not apply Merit® 75 WSP Insecticide while bees are foraging. Do not apply Merit 75 WSP Insecticide to plants that are flowering. Only apply after all flower petals have fallen off. For optimum control of grubs, billbugs, annual bluegrass weevil, and European crane fly larvae, make application prior to egg hatch of the target pest.
Be sure to read "Application Equipment for Use on Turfgrass" Section of this label.
