For those who verticut fairways, what is a good depth on bentgrass?  Renting a unit.  It was set to 3/8.  Didn't look very deep so after a partial first pass we set it to 9/16.  Like the depth but too much to clean up for our little operation.
    3/8 a good number?

    Thank you.

We have the Wiedenmann Triple V.  We don't measure the depth with anything other than my eyes...lol.  I raised the depth 3-4 turns of the dial this year.  We were still into the soil later, but not as deep.  We were able to increase our speed from about 3.0 MPH to about 5.1 MPH with no issued.  We have bentgrass on some fairways and a poopoo platter of grasses on other fairways.   When we hit the solid bentgrass, we would need to slow down a bit, so the turf would not tear and the machine would not bounce off the ground.  By raising the depth, we also did not damage the bentgrass stands as much as we have in years.

My depth gage was when I looked at the groove, I could still see a brown soil layer in the groove....I believe we went way too deep in  years past.

We ended up only doing the one partial hole, short side of a split fw par 5 at the 9/16 on Monday.  Went back to 3/8 and got the remaining fairways and approaches done plus double verticut the range tee, about 24 acres total, in less than 4 days.  Wednesday we got 7 holes (3 par 3, 3 par 4, and 1 par 5), verticut and cleaned up in 7 hours.  Late starts due to frost cut short a couple days so we could have probably had everything completed in 3 days.  We would skip a couple holes to better stay ahead of play.

At 3/16 we removed about 10 gator loads of material per hole on average and left a lot of little pieces behind that the sweeper and blower couldn't move.  We will solid tine next week.

This will be the new normal for us, spring and fall verticut and solid tine.  Too time consuming to core and cleanup with our little crew and trying to work around a full golf course.  We gave up on coring several years ago because it was impossible to get more than 7 to 10 done before the weather was gone.  We have been doing solid tine spring and fall since then.  I have been looking at verticuts for several years at the show and have been trying to get the owners to let me buy one.  If we had our own we wouldn't have to try to get so many done in one day and could stretch out the process as weather and other tasks dictate.

    Chris,

Hello again my friend.....long time no speak

I inherited bentgrass fairways this year upon my return to golf after 13 years.  I verticut my fairways, yes get ready, at a depth of 1 3/4".  Yes an 1 3/4".  I had a tractor PTO driven verticutter (it was actually an old Toro 83/93 slicer/seeder that I took the seeder off of) and we went to town.  We had to go somewhat slow, but boy did we remove a ton of material.  It took us several hours to verticut and several hours to blow material into the wood lines, but man did we do a number on our fairways.  They healed nicely and it was desperately needed.
