We have 2004 electric ez go golf carts. We are having increasing issues with the splines on the brake drum to axle stripping. We have been replacing the brake drums or axles or both in some cases. Anyone had this issue or have any suggestions how to fix it. I believe they strip before they cause any major problems but we do not see any other issues. Sometimes the replacements will last a couple years to one set of drums that would only last a couple of months.
    Any suggestions

    Thanks in advance

The brake drums are made of a softer metal than the axles and designed to wear out first as opposed to replacing the axles. Make sure that the castle nuts holding on the drums are properly tightened. The castle nuts being loose can contribute to premature failure of the splines on the drums. Another factor leading to premature failure can be operator negligence. If the guys change forward reverse direction without coming to a complete stop this can cause premature failure. Maybe the cart guys are doing this on a regular basis when pulling carts out? We had a fleet of 2009 EZ-Go carts that the castle nuts were improperly tightened in the factory that caused widespread brake drum spline failure, but never had issues with the splines on the axles. EZ-Go replaced all the brake drums on a 80 cart fleet under warranty.

    Good luck.

The shafts are not hard to replace, however when replacing just the drums be sure to coat the splines with a heavy / good grease. If there is a little wear it will absorb some of the movement and metal to metal and help them last longer. Just want to be sure and clean off all the excess so it doesn't get inside the drum and shoes.

It's a good pm practice to retorque the rear axle once a year. Ezgo manual specifies 80-90 ft. lbs.
