How many days does it take for an employee to miss without calling in before you terminate him?

I got one that has not showed up since leaving early last Thursday (for a dentist appointment) and the last day he called in was Friday to tell me his truck would not start. I always try to give the benefit of doubt to my workers but this time of the year I really need the extra hand. The only reason I am not terminating him today (start of a new pay period) is I do not want to have to pay him for his vacation time this week (better to put it off until the next pay period).

One day. If an employee can't even take the time to call or have someone call for them, the job isn't important to them.

We used to have a rule that you could only 'no show no call' 3 times before you were fired. That rule tells the employee it is okay to to no show no call 2 times.

Every day of no call/no show leads to an additional 3 days off with NO pay.
This hits them in the wallet and cuts down on that quite a bit.
Hasn't been as issue for me, anyway.

No call, no show, no work. "No work" part depends on how many offenses it is to that point. Like its been said, if they don't have 2 minutes to call, they don't value their job.

    Update,

I also agree with you on no call, no show no work. I do however try to keep an open mind incase the person might of had an emergency and was in the hospital or in jail! this particular individual though has not called since last Friday! I am filling out the volunteary quit paperwork today though. I waited until today ,only to put off having to pay him his one week vacation pay until the next pay period.

Now to try to find another person that wants to work.

I agree with trying to find out if they are at the ER, one never knows by the time they take you back how long will you be back there. I had it happen to me a couple of weeks ago, I kept waiting hoping to go back and quickly get released, but by the time I got back there I know it would be a while and I was frantically texting both my course and the other letting them know I wouldn't be in. Ended up being the only day off until yesterday for the last 4 weeks. Was a little scary thought of possible blood clot from all the chemo, ended up it was but just superficial not a deep one.

But of course with this person, out that many days, you would have thought someone would call for them.

Well this ended up being a moot point since the employee never came back or called so I wrote his termination slip as quit.

I also had another pull something similar in that he took a four day weekend and called me telling me he had personal issues which I let slide temporarily until his third day back when he came in 35 minutes late, see ya!

Its amazing how fast those positions filled though. The day I was writing the first ones pink slip I had an older member come by looking for work on the course. Even at our low pay he still wanted to work telling me it was more then he was making presently. This was great since he was a machine operator and already knew the course. I filled the other position yesterday with a younger able body person.
