I am getting a new rotary rough mower and have narrowed my decision down to a Toro 4000 or a Jac R311T. Does anyone have experience with either of these in regard to performance and maintenance?

Can't help you with those two machines, but if you could, I would suggest getting both on a demo again for at least 2 to 3 hours and check their fuel consumption. We just bought a JD 1600 Turbo and that thing will burn anywhere from 2.2 to 2.4 gallons per hour, our old 5111 would burn about 1.8 to 2 gallons per hour at the most (with mulching kit on). With over 600 hours plus per year, that would be at least 200 gallons of diesel fuel per season. Nothing to sneeze at in my opinion.

I had a 4000 for 4 yrs...best rough mower I ever owned. Didn't have a single problem. Very good traction and also mulched very well. I wish I still had it.

I have a 4.5 year old Toro 4000 and couldn't be happier. It cuts well, mows 40 plus acres a day including going around tee banks and bunkers. It is a dream to drive. My mechanic loves it , the operators love it. No major breakdowns. Be sure to idle for 5 minutes before turning off, it has a turbo on it.

I bought ours with the good seat, close to air ride. Get the sun roof, so worth it. I don't have many trees, so to tell you how well it mulches, I can't.

Mechanic mentioned that you really need to follow the PM's on it and it will run great. We run the belts til they break. Most belts will make it most of the season. Change the blades every week or so as needed.

Do any of you with the Toro 4000 have wet conditions and if so how did it do? Also it claims 1.57 gph do you think this is accurate in your experience?

That sounds a little low but I'm not working with a 4000, my 5111 would be around 1.8 during the normal part of the season, and get to about 2 gph during spring and fall when mulching leaves or with mulching or gator blades on I have seen it as low as 1.6 late summer. The 1600 Deere, the best I saw late summer with very little grass growth was right about 2 gph, but it usually is 2.4 gph, no mulching deck or gator blades.

Is the 1.57 in the literature? I would suspect they run it on flat treeless terrain and come up with a favorable number similar to being able to mow x number acres per hour, which I never achieve because I'm either stopping for more coffee or stopping to get rid of it. I wonder too if 1.57 is accurate? I do remember about 9 years ago we did a demo with a Jac and JD fairway mower, put my two best operators on them and sent them out, that Deere used less fuel even with the bigger engine, my mechanic thought it was because it didn't have to work as hard.
