I am currently upgrading my irrigation system from Network 8000 to the Toro Lynx system. The two questions I have are:
Is an electrician necessary or can my irrigation tech with my help install it properly?
Is there any value left for the Toro Network 8000 satellites, parts or selling?
    Thanks

The electrical portion of it is a piece of cake. However, once you have the recommended grounding installed, I would have an electrician check the resistance to determine if more grounding needs to be installed. To me, grounding is the most vital part that reduces a ton of headaches down the road.

Would there me more grounding necessary than what is currently in the ground? Could the existing grounding be so old that it can't really be trusted to work properly?

There should be a market for the used parts. Last I checked they went for $250/box. Look at Turfnet classifieds or contact your local Toro distributor. They may have a better idea.

Yes. Corrosion on the old ground can prevent good contact to Earth. There is also newer recommendations on the amount of resistance needed and better products available versus what was recommended when your old boxes were installed. For all you know your existing grounding may not even work. Only way to know is have it checked.

    Darren,
I agree with the others that have posted. A good rule of thumb for solid state equipment is for tested grounds to be 10 ohms or better verified properly with a megohm meter (some call a 'Megger'). A voltmeter can not adequately test your grounds. Get 10 ohms or better and you are normally golden.

Good luck, you will love the Lynx system.

    Darren,
You may want to check out the UNI-T 275 used for earth ground testing. It's not too pricey and may pay for itself and more depending upon what an electrician charges. Even if you use it once, it still has resell value. Keep in mind, now is a good time to break up multiple heads on one station if the wiring was run all the way to the satellite or valve box. It does change the programming needs and the As-built but worth it for control purposes. I posted an article on our website recently that details all the steps to satellite installation. It may be of use for you and or your irrigator.

Good luck and feel free to call me if you have any questions once you jump into it. We have installed well over 300 satellites.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We have installed 3 so far and the rest will be done in the next two weeks, when you have the proper parts and supplies the installation is very easy.
If anybody is interested in purchasing working Network 8000 satellites just let me know, I see no reason to throw away something that can help other people out.
