I am teaching a seminar on negotiating at the GIS. I am looking for some of the most interesting and unusual benefits or perks that Superintendents have negotiated with their employers. I would appreciate learning of some of the unique and creative things that fellow Superintendents have negotiated so that I can share this with my class. Thanks. Tommy Witt, CGCS

    Tommy,

I used to call on a guy, who on one visit, was drinking a can of Coors Light on his lunch break around 11:00 AM. He had a sandwich and chips, too, so the beer wasn't all he had for lunch. So anyways, as we're talking shop, he burped a couple times, and then cracked open another Coors Light. He looks at me and tells me the two Coors Lights a day was part of his compensation package.

I could only guess he negotiated that.

    Tommy,

A couple of years ago I negotiated a 25% allocation of my base salary to my side business. This won't work on all properties, but does in my case as the job entails work other than the golf course.

By doing this I was able to shelter some wages and reduce my own yearly tax burden. At the same time, the company benefited by having a lower cost of employee matching premiums. It is a win win situation, financially.

Right now I am trying to negotiate a cut in pay for a cut in hours.I was hoping to cut 20% each year for five years in trade for an extra day off each week, then two ,then three ,then four.Sort of a slow way to retirement.
