I'm Curious if anyone has an efficient and effective method for sharpening carbide tipped verticut blades. In the past we've just replaced them, but it's about $720 for a set. There's still plenty of life on the tips but they're starting to get a little rounded off and we're not getting as clean a cut as normal. It seems a guy would have to go in with a die grinder and individually grind each tip. 81 blades x 11 tips per blade = 891 tips to grind.

    Hey Rocky,

Not sure what type of reel grinder you may have but you can grind rollers, groomers, verticuts, etc on the Bernhard Express Dual. Maybe if you don't have one somebody around you may be able to help out? It takes about 3-5 minutes per unit. Probably a bit quicker than grinding by hand :D

My first guess is you won't have a consumable disc in your shop that will touch the carbide tip. That said, do a little research on the health hazards of grinding carbide, and you may decide to rethink this.

I thought, a couple years ago, that I needed to replace mine. The tips were fine, not "sharp" but intact. I was getting a little wear on the fin behind the blade though. In my opinion, the new cut no different than the seven year old blades, and I happened to save the oldies and use them for misc projects like retrofitting a 1000 to a verticutter and they work just fine.

Thanks for the replies. We opted to lower them 1/16th" to make up for the little bit of wear and they seemed to perform well.
