Just wondering what any of you would consider what the setting on your groomer would be if you want to do light grooming. Right now we are set .025" lower than our height of cut of .155". Looks ok, not too aggressive, however could we be set too light and could we go .050" lower with no issues. We have old poa/bent greens that have come out of winter in pretty good shape. Would appreciate any advice that any of you may have.

Old school was to use a nickle as a gauge. Worked great on 100% poa. I never used any thing else.

Might want to use a quarter now, might be worth what a nickel was back in our old school days?

I just adjust them till they leave lines and then back off till they don't leave lines anymore. Gives me the results I want with bent greens.

Agree with Corey. Regardless of turf type if you go too deep you won't get the full effect. One should be able to groom/brush just about daily. If not, then you're likely too aggressive.

Over a decade ago Dr. Engleke in his Bentgrass Greens Mgmt seminar suggested grooming every day with groomers set at 25% to 50% lower than the bedknives. We do groom every day as long as sand or fertilizer is not present. The bedknives on our QA4 heads on the Deere triplex are bench set at.095 and the groomers set at .065. As the QA4 heads are light we believe the true hoc is probably closer to .115 - .125

    Richard,

I actually looked at those exact same depths earlier this week. We determined the 0.025 was a light, 0.035 was a medium, and 0.045 was more of a heavy. It varies with height, as I remember in the fall, I really liked the 0.045, but was also mowing at a higher HOC. We did try a 0.015 and noticed that we were still cleaning things up, but there were no noticeable lines. If I groomed daily, I'd go with the 0.015. Currently, we are experimenting with the 0.025 twice per week and cross directions. This week we groomed when we mowed in the 6-12 and 3-9 directions. Next week will be 2-8 and 4-10 directions. If I were topdressing after, I'd most likely go with the 0.045 or go with the verticutter a little deeper.

There shouldn't be noticeable lines with groomers.

We have poa greens, i used to set them at 20% but the superintendent didn't like it went more aggressive and he still didn't like it. I set them now flush with the front and rear rollers, bench set. You can see the lines and that is what he likes.
