How do you know bermudagrass is "dormant"?

Winterkill issue?? If the stolons "snap" when bent in half it's usually alive. Got to think it would be growing by now no matter where you are located. It has been cold and wet in DC for most of May, bermuda is green but not growing that much. Actually a couple of sprigging jobs going on in the area. We sprigged Latitude into our football practice field last week. Kenneth Ingram, UMD

Hey Scott, can you elaborate. Are you talking about in winter for r-up?

In reference to when spraying herbicides that are safe on "dormant" bermudagrass. Our collars and high traffic
areas rarely are "dormant" for more that a week. I was just curious how others percieve it safe to spray herbicides with this restriction.

I am not sure that "turns brown" in an adequate parameter. It seems to me that soil temps below 50F and time are better indicators, but I am not sure how long this has to be. I have seen some horror shows resulting from glyphosate applications on brown Bermudagrass.

I have seen some of what Scott has as well, but on zoysia. Brown on top, but deep down there is green when we really got close and looked.

We have found up here that it is never 100% dormant. We will lower the rates when we are unsure and grit out teeth and spray. On fairways we do not spot spray or they will look like checker boards for the first few months after green up. Spray all or none. Personally I dont think you can kill bermuda with round up but you sure can wound it if your not careful. JMO.

I have found that if I apply round-up @ 16\oz\ac It will delay the spring greens up by a week or so. I typically spray my fairways in January here in Ft Worth TX

I agree with Fred. Spraying glyphosate at a pint per acre even on semi-dormant Bermuda will not kill it, it will simply delay greenup. Dr. Fred Yelverton from NC State would be someone to talk to .
