Hi. I need to estimate the renovation of a small lake in front of the club house. It was a fairly standard job until they ( the club officiers) decided that they wanted a stone retaining wall for a portion of the lake edge. My problem is: how does the plastic liner seal the lake, and the wall without being visible. Perhaps someone has lined a lake that had railroad ties or wooden supports? I will be grateful for any suggestions.

I did a small lake that had a wall (concrete block with rock covering so all you see is the rock) all the way around, I built a shelf in the soil and then placed the plastic liner and built a wall on top of the shelf over the liner. It worked well I did use some rebar and used a silicon sealer around each hole that went into liner. Lake has been in about 4 years and has never been a problem. My wall is only 18" high and 90% is under water.

I worked in the golf business from 1973 to 2013. When we were building the retaining walls at Ponte Vedra, from the dark muddy water I asked Pete Dye, "How long will this wall last?" He responded that it ought to last 20 years. I mumbled some to effect of, "effin great!" He said, "What do you mean?" I said, "I am going to have to build these things two more times before I retire!"

    Bill,

We did some lake edges many years back in a similar fashion to how Keith described. Only difference was rather than actually using rock for the wall we did gunnite material similar to what a swimming pool would be. They then actually had a guy carve the rock pattern in the gunnite and it was spray painted in colors that made it look like real rock. Kind of like "Disney Rock". It actually looks very good and has held up well for 10+ years so far. Got to be cheaper than real rock would be my guess?
