Just a quick question. Does anyone cut cups one nine each day? Same with mowing tees. What do you do when you have a special event, do you cut all 18 cups or just the nine that is due to be cut that day? Is there any advantage of doing this ? With this system I realize I will be mowing tees on both weekend days. Just trying to be efficient and staying out of the golfers way. Hoping this may save on labor cost also.

It's going to be hard to recommend anything without knowing what your situation is. I bet most are cutting back, but each situation has different requirements/expectations.

    David,

Only day we do not change all 18 cups is a Monday when members do not play golf. If we have a event that day, outing for instance we will change the cups all of them as those are normally afternoon events. We begin our mornings well in advance of the first tee times on both 1 and 10 tee, so it is the job of the cup changer to get around ahead of the players on the first few holes. I do it most of the time and very rarely have issues staying ahead of them as I usually have 1.5 hours of time at least prior to the early players. I change the cup, check the green for insect/disease issues and utilize a moisture meter to keep track or the watering needs on each green including our practice greens. I also try to make 6 easy, 6 modest, 6 hard pin placements daily, along with color flags for front back middle. As a decent player myself I find it my job to be respectful to the greens and our members, as well as a fun job in the mornings to start the day. One thing every player sees when they play the course is the cup, so straight flag, good edges, and correct reasonable positioning is important everyday. Also our players play here many days a week and changing all the cups, often gives them a different feel to the course every time they come out to play. To me it is part of keeping the greens in great shape and making their rounds fun.

We cut 9 holes a day on alternate 9s. We rake bunkers T,th,S,S.
Manpower issue mostly, but lots of complaints a few years ago about old plugs. No complaints since we changed.

Steve, I'm assuming you don't have pin locations to go by?

I have 27 holes and usually mow 9 holes of tees per day. It's extremely rare that a member is able to perceive the difference. At another course I worked at we used to mow 6 holes of collars per day, because it worked in well with the other things that we were doing.

I think if you try out the things you are suggesting you will find that you will have no resistance to them from your customers. And if you find that you do have complaints, then just change it back. The only thing that I could imagine that you would get comments on would be cup changing.

When I have ideas like these that I feel will improve our efficiency, and therefore improve the overall quality of the course I usually try them out and see what happens. You can always go back if you get a negative response to the change.

We have pin locations so if we change one we change all.

We are cutting back and I need to have everything done in 3 hrs. To get this done I need 9 people everyday. Its had to find people to work when there going to only work 3 hrs a day 15 hrs a week. This is why I was wondering if cutting 9 cups a day would allow me to get away with less people, same with mowing tees.
