I am beginning to get a list of equipment together for a new lease order and I have a question that some of you may be able to shed some light on. What kind of pump do I want for my spray rig? We are going with John Deere and im looking at the HD-200 so do I want a centrifugal or diaphragm pump? I'm thinking diaphragm. What do you guys think?

I recently switched to Deere sprayers from Toro so that I could have a centrifugal pump. Nothing wrong with the diaphragms spraying but we tended to have many problems with them breaking. Not much to go wrong with a centrifugal.

But....if you are applying paints, I highly recommend getting a diaphragm pump. The seals in a centrifugal don't hold up well against the paints. But, I recently learned of changing out the seals to a simple oil seal rather than the ceramic seals it has come with. Haven't tried it yet, but plan on doing so once the seals go out with what I've got.

We have 2 JD HD 200 sprayers and both have centrifugal pumps and rarely have a problem. Yes the seal will wear out but it only takes about a half hour to change and they normally last a few years. Like Andy said, if you are spraying a lot of paints, you probably should consider diaphragm. Some herbicides can be rough on seals, but knock on wood, we have not had any problems.

Consider also that centrifugal pumps provide far more volume, and therefore far superior agitation. If you are spraying things that you need to keep suspended, centrifugal will do a much better job.
