    All,

I recently took over at my course and some of the collars have some bermuda and it has been creeping into the edges of the greens. On a couple of greens is has started popping up more in the center. I have never dealt with anything like this. My guess is put some form of a barrier at the collar/green edge and or resod the burmuda with blue/rye. If I slice down deep enough would it sever the stolons and kill the bermuda in the greens? What about the crap popping up in the middle of the greens. Thanks for any input.

    Andy

Spraying Tupersan at .5oz/M along greens edge can hold it at bay somewhat. Cutting the stolons will only result in more individual Bermuda plants since the stolons have surely rooted into the green at the nodes. I had a green with some Bermuda contamination in the middle and I carefully sprayed Fusilade/Roundup on spots and then replaced them with fresh Bentgrass sod. We also dug down into mix as far as needed to be sure we got all rhizomes out. Pain in the ass but effective.

We have also seen great success with Tupersan at a rate as high as 8.5 oz/M in combination with Banner Maxx at 2 oz/M. The Banner Maxx helps with the efficacy of the Tupersan. Rates may vary given your location so check with your local university or sales rep. We have a rye/bluegrass combination for collars and have been spraying Tupersan for 5 years now using just one nozzle overlapping the collar/green interface. There is little to no Bermuda in our collars now and there has been little to no damage to the bent greens.

tupersan has mixed results. try pylex from BASF. it will take the bermuda out of bent quickly. bermuda will turn bright white after the application. its a fairly new product, and not labeled for greens, but i know of numerous guys in the southeast that are using it this year on their greens.

    Thanks Guys,

How do these two herbicides affect poa? I'm anywhere from 80-100% poa.

    Thanks,

    Andy

    Hello Matthew,

Please, what rates are these supers using on their bent poa greens? Are there special application tricks?

    Thank you Michael

Mizzou did some research on fairway hight bent, they found that the pyto on the bent was mostly unacceptable, but it did recover at 21 days. This for spring and summer applications, they were going to do some fall applications as well.

On another note I do know some one in our area tried it on nursery greens with good success, don't know if they had the pyto issues. They used a rate of .33 oz per acre, they found all grass bleached out, in a week the bent recovered, and in two weeks the bermuda started greening up, so a second application was made, (I guess at the same .33 oz/acre) and the bent was unfazed, but the bermuda was then taken out.

Results from MIzzou trails in the booklet, page 16 and 17

My experience with Pylex on Bent has been very inconsistent response and certainly not a quick eradication of the Bermuda without seriously harming the Bent. There are differential tolerances between the species to the herbicide which can be used in a program to favor Bent over Bermuda, but it will be a long drawn out affair unless you find other means to speed the process. A more fitting description is suppression of Bermuda in Bent ...not removal. Since my experience has been so inconsistent, I strongly recommend you NOT apply to greens until you have had time to evaluate several scenarios (timing and rates) on a less sensitive area. I have been working with the product for over two years on Bent fairways mowed between .375"-.400" with multiple rates and timings. I'm still learning and adjusting to find a program that assists with Bermuda removal without compromising the Bent.
