    Paul,

I just read the GCSAA email article about using an 8" inch cup on some holes there at Murfield,
A couple of questions. Where did you find these cups? We were going to custom make some for us but if pricing is right we might purchase these cups. Also, I had heard that the USGA was looking into this larger cup issue and was considering an 3'' larger cup making it 7'' why did you chose 8"? What do you use for the larger cup setting process? I do think these larger cups will encourage play by new and existing golfers. We are going to have only the larger cup at our facility once we find a source. We also no longer use tee markers (we have just one large tee for each hole) allowing the golfers to choose a less intimidating teeing area.

    Thanks for any help!

8" cup tournaments are quite common around Iowa. We use this:

to cut the 8" hole, then use a standard cup cutter to set another cup in the bottom of that to hold the flag. Is somewhat of a pain the next day to level the larger plug, but it is usually just a once a year tournament in the fall.

We have 3 "Big Cup" Tournaments a year. The last one we had to do a Sat and Sun because we have a full tee sheet both days. The Standard Catalog has the cups and cup cutter.

I found this, on the 8" cup, I remember a 6" cup was going around for a time in the 70's or early 80's never was a hit.
