   Been reading a lot in magazines lately about all of the different things superintendents are doing to calculate water needs. Not once I have got out and monitored ET rates, as far as calculating them. My practices include, the grass and roots will tell me when they need water. I spend a lot of time in the field. If I have to run irrigation at night it comes down to irrigating for 2 nights to get my .25 inches based off of calculation. That's about as detailed as I get. Anything wrong with the way I do it? I just prefer to be as easy going with it as I can. Numbers are for accountants.

   I don't think you are wrong at all, some guys like to make irrigation decision's based on your method. I basically do the same but reconfirm my findings with a moisture meter,the weather forecast, and previous usage records.
   
   With the current drought scenario most of the country is experiencing , using as much information and "gut" feeling is the decision that I'm probably guessing most of us are doing. It is easy to just hit the water button on our computers and walk away, but that isn't responsible water management and could be a fairly easy trap to fall into.

   Thanks for the reply. I am very conservative when it comes to watering. We pump into a storage pond from the nearby creek, but the DNR is right down my back when it comes to pumping alot. Having bermuda fairways is a big saver, but again instead of focusing on ET rates i mainly just use the old probe. I do good tracking what goes out everynight as far as gallons, but during the day I have to use assumed variables from gpm on heads and how long I used a hose because our control panel for the pump has a mind of its own when it comes to tracking. Just was looking for a second opinion thanks.
